I'm new to rifles and scopes. I recently acquired a remington 700 adl in .308 from cabelas with their alpha scope on it. I also just got a ruger 10/22. I was planning to put the cabelas alpha scope on the ruger 10/22. Cheaper scope on the cheaper rifle. Then bought a leupold vx3 cds 4.5-14x40 for the 700. I didn't do tons of research first but know these are reputable enough items it is hard to go wrong. I can always buy more stuff later but this should keep me interested for a bit :D.

I shot the 700 with that alpha scope as is stock with that alpha scope combo. After fumbling around making a few shots to try to get it sighted in I was able to put the next 3 about 3" apart at 100 yards which isn't good but again I'm a newb. This was laying prone with a harris swivel bipod w/podloc on the rifle. Put only 7 rounds though it so far.

1. I haven't even mounted the vx3 cds to the 700 yet or the alpha scope to the 10/22. Any pointers here and recommendations on mounting? I need to figure out how to do it and what accessories and mounting hardware I need.

2. I picked up the leupold vx3 cds just before end of the year when they had the promo for the 2 free cds dials. I need to supply leupold with the ballistic info for those. I am not reloading since I am a newb and have enough other stuff to learn for now. I don't have immediate plans to go hunting but it is high on my bucket list. I'm wondering what factory loads you'd recommended I get dials made up for? I'm also not sure how much difference there is in drop based on different ammo type, temp, elevation, etc. Since I get 2 dials free I should try to get common ones I may use but that are different enough to warrant 2 different dials. The ammo I shot through it already was 7.62x51 fmj winchester 147gr and I had no issues with it. Wondering if this is a good one to use??? Obviously for target use since I need to practice. I also have 3 boxes of Federal Premium Gold Medal Match .308 Win. Rifle Ammunition since they had rebates on it recently. Never shot it yet. Also seems to be marketed for target use. So I should probably get a dial made up for one of these two types of ammo. Then I'm wondering what other ammo I should get a dial made for??? Perhaps something more hunting oriented. Anyway, recommendations for these dials???

I live in NW suburbs of Chicago IL. I don't foresee traveling far to mountains for hunting any time soon. One step at a time. So elevation won't change much for me around here at about ~800' asl. Not sure how much the temp changes things for these dials. Is there much difference with 30 degrees of temp swing and up to say 500 yards?
