I see what you are saying. Would the S&W book tell me about the gun when it left the factory such as how long the barrel was and what finish it left with?

I already gave you a pretty good estimate of when your revolver was made. My SN 725XX left the factory in 1916. That is not an estimate, that is from the mouth (or pen) of Roy JInks the official S&W historian. Your revolver has the large mushroom shaped cap on the end of the ejector rod, which is typical for that period. I would guess your revolver shipped sometime in the late teens or very early 1920s. The SCSW book does not go into any more detail on ship dates for serial numbers for that model other than to say they shipped from 1915 until 1940 with serial numbers ranging from 65701 to 144684, with 78,983 manufactured. If you want to find out exactly what the finish was, how long the barrel was, and where it shipped you will have to get a factory letter for it. These days a letter costs $100. I remember when they cost $30, which was a heck of a deal.
