Since many crimes happen in low light circumstances, having night sights makes it much easier and quicker to get a sight picture in low light. Some argue that if there isn't sufficient light to see your sights properly and readily, then there isn't sufficient light to see and identify your target. That isn't is not universally correct. There are all sorts of lighting conditions that make it hard to see your sights but where you can still identify a threat. For example, in low light, trying to line up your black sights on a person wearing dark clothing can be nearly very difficult and quite slow.

YES. I have night sights or laser grips on all of my guns except for my S&W 686 & 629.

I don't have night sites on my home defense gun right now, but agree that I need them. My eye sight in low level light conditions is no longer good. In fact, laser grips make total sense to me.

The AO big dot sights I had on my Kimber Ultra Carry were, without a doubt the fastest, most accurate and easiest to use combat sights I have ever used.

When I went through my latest Advanced Tactical Shooting course, I carried my Warrior. About 25% of the class was in near total darkness. About 50% of the class was in low, low light.

The people who did not have NSs were in deep trouble. While we all were required to bring our rail lights, I was one of two who has NSs. I was able to acquire my targets w/o the light. Others had difficulty even with the light. The NSs truly make a difference.

Wait...did I just say something positive about Kimber?! I must have been slipped drugs. :D I do love my Warrior! :banghead:

no matter how disoriented I am when Im on the road in some strange hotel (most of the time) I can see where my gun is by those glowing sights. I really cannot find any drawback to my meprolights, regardless of whether I am shooting in bright sunlight or near darkness.

Neither novelty nor necessity.

Calling them essential or frivilous is to err on either end of the spectrum. They have a legitimate use, but I don't feel handicapped without them. If I'm engaging targets in near darkness, I'd darn well better have a light. Which is why my standard load is a handgun, reload, knife and a Streamlight. I do feel that a highly visible front sight is important, but feel no need for it to glow in the dark. I've found that a sufficiently bright light will make a sufficiently visible front sight perfectly useable in low light. If I had a handgun that already had the sights, I'd feel no need to remove them, but I also feel no need to install them on my current inventory.

Definetly not a novelty. Try lining up your sights in the darkness of your home at night. I personally have a set of Truglo TFO's on all but 2 of my pistols, they have meprolights. I really like the TFO's they are lit in the daytime as well.

My night sights are visible across my dark bedroom, to help locate the weapon if nesessary, also the frt and rear are differant colors, to be sure the frt sight is in the middle. A flashlight is a must:)

i have trijicons on every pistol i own. i even put them on my sisters sw sigma. they defiantly provide an advantage in low light conditions. my bedroom and the hallway leading to it are pitch black but the rest of the house has night lights, if someone breaks in i could engage them from a concealed position in the dark hallway and still see them lit up by the night lights. without night sites i would have difficulty lining up in that situation.

Necessity for sure. Better safe than sorry. People who say otherwise are either too cheap to buy night sights and are making excuses, or they haven't found a set that works well for them.

Like Insurance

...

Yep, all my guns have them with the exception of the Colt Defender.

My night gun HD nightstand gun, my P229R CT 9mm also has Crimson Trace laser grips.

And I converted the Px4's supernova glow sights, which needed some kind of bright light to charge them up, lasted only 20 mins on a good night, so I put Trijicons on them for 135 bucks..

Considering that any real night sights glow 24/7, never need a charge, and last on-average 8yrs that, like insurance, one hates to pay for it, never use it for years and years but, the one time, or two, that you need the insurance, it pays to have it - that I believe.

So too is the assurance/insurance of having Night Sights if ever you're really in the dark, as mentioned, I can locate my nightstand gun every-time by seeing easily, the green glow of the rear sights.

Taking the 135 dollar investment over 8 yrs, sides heavily on the, it's more than affordable, ridiculous level.. lol

Get them if you can IMHO, as you never know when they will be the only thing you can see in the dark, along with knowing where the muzzle of your gun IS pointing.

As others have noted, night sights really, really come in handy in locating your handgun in the dark ...

As Doc2005 noted, if you're required to do night-shoots or low-light shoots, that'll be when you'll realize nightsights are a necessity.
People who say otherwise are either too cheap to buy night sights and are making excuses, or they haven't found a set that works well for them.
Well, that may be a little harsh. I suspect it's more of a situation that those folks simply have no experience with nightsights or have never had a need for 'em.

Half of every single day ... is night.

Criminal attacks happen with disproportionate frequency during the hours of darkness.

It's a lot easier to hit the assailant if you can see your sights.

I live in a relatively smallish apartment right now and there's always enough ambient light from the street lights outside to properly see my sights in every area in my apartment no matter the time of day. Besides my SD gun, a XD 9 Service, points so well for me that I'm fully confident in my ability to point shoot at the longest distance available in my apartment. So for me at this time, night sights would be an unnecessary addition.

However, if you find yourself with a situation not quite as well lit as mine, they might be an essential improvement to your gun.

Criminals (like cockroaches) love the dark. Night sights are NECESSARY for civilians to effectively aim a pistol in low/no-light situations. The scenerios in which night-sights MAY present a liability are, to me, akin to the excuses NOT to wear seatbelts. The Pros so FAR OUTWEIGH the Cons that the reasons NOT to use them are almost laughable.

Novelty

14K yellow gold beads are proven, goes way back to what gunfighters used and still used by those, such as those at NTI study group members.

These show in all lighting conditions, do not have the weaknesses as do night sights.

These also do not give one away as some night sights are capable of.

They are nice when they work, but the front sight (Novak) on my new SIG GSR stopped glowing altogether.

I've found that if you shoot with a flashlight held above or alongside the handgun, the "backwash" from the light illuminates the sights.

No night sights on my HD gun (Ruger P345) but I have a light on the rail that's slightly brighter than the sun.

I do have a S&W M&P in 9mm with night sights but its not my HD or carry gun at this time. I actually bought it for $399 on an auction so the night sites were really just a bonus!
