Are the nipples,on a 1860 Army Colt,removed thru the chamber(where the bullet and powder reside),or out the back of the cylinder(external)? I know this is a dumb question,sorry. Thanks for your help.

Nipples are installed or removed externally. They're screwed into the back of the cylinder, into threaded holes at the tops of each of the six chambers.
Remove the barrel, then remove the cylinder.
Use a nipple wrench to remove the nipples from the back of the cylinder.
