The state Senate on Thursday gave final passage to a bill banning the sale of .50-caliber rifles, high-powered weapons that are accurate to more than one mile and popular with some firearms enthusiasts.

A second bill calls for the firearms permit information to be encoded in driver's licenses, or a "smart card" for people without a driver's license and training for first time applicants.

Living outside of and working in Philly I see a lot of NJ news especially issues in Camden. I'm sure the ban of 50 cal's (if passed) will solve every issue. Serioulsy we all know the % of rifles used in crimes is a small % of all gun crime, what does banning a 50 cal rifle really do other than take more freedom away from citizen's and make the lawmakers feel good and puff out their chests saying look what we did. Glad I still live in PA even though I have to contend with all the Philly crap.

they banned a rifle that like 10 people in this state own, can only shoot in one location, and only by prior appointment.

Well, between banning those 10 rifles, and the ban on hollowpoint ammo, I bet their crime just VANISHES! What a bunch of legislative geniuses...

I think I'll move there. Or not. Maybe I'll just smash my toe with hammer. That'll feel better.

Some believe this is Christie's way of satisfying the anti gun crowd in the aftermath of Sandy Hook. Basically, throw them a bone that doesn't really do anything except to a few people, and hope he can say he "did something" regarding "gun violence" (no such thing, I know it is human violence), and get re-elected.

*sigh*... again... there is no ban on HP ammo in NJ.

Provided certain conditions are met, a sportsman may transport and use hollow point ammunition. There are no restrictions preventing a sportsman from keeping such ammunition at his home.

N.J.S.A 2C:39-3f(1) limits the possession of hollow nose ammunition. However, there is a general exception that allows for the purchase of this ammunition but restricts the possession of it to specified locations. This exception provides that:

(2) Nothing is sub section f (1) shall be construed to prevent a person from keeping such ammunition at his dwelling, premises or other land owned or possessed by him, or from carrying such ammunition from the place of purchase to said dwelling or land . . . [N.J.S.A 26:39-3g (2)].

Thus a person may purchase this ammunition and keep it within the confines of his property. Sub section f (1) further exempts from the prohibited possession of hollow nose ammunition "persons engaged in activities pursuant to N.J.S.A 2C:39-6f. . . ."
N.J.S.A 26:39-3f. (1).

Activities contained in N.J.S.A 26:39-6f. can be broken down as follows:

1.A member of a rifle or pistol club organized under rules of the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and which filed its charter with the State Police;
2.A person engaged in hunting or target practice with a firearm legal for hunting in this State;
3.A person going directly to a target range, and;
4.A person going directly to an authorized place for "practice, match, target, trap or skeet shooting exhibitions."

seriously... I need a 50 line sig to put in links to correct all the misnomers about NJ. We're bad, but we're not THAT bad. I can still at least have 15rnds in my mags.

pilot: agreed. it's throwaway legislation to him. but the fact he's going to support it puts me at odds for voting for him. Seth Grossman is looking like they guy for my vote. I know he has practically no chance to beat Christie, but I'll fight for him anyways.

What are the NRA and Gun Owners Of America doing to help the gun owners in New Jersey against these proposals? And if Christie signs these into law and then runs on the National ticket does he really expect the support of gun owners across the nation? He can't have it two ways.

They would never use such definitive language to get rid of those evil hollow points. You can buy them and bring them home. You just have to keep them in your house or on your property and not carry them past your lawn. You can load them at the range too. But they would never ban the ammo, you are right.

.50 rifles and ammo are just like "assault rifles." A very small amount of crime is done with them but no one seems to care about that. As soon as politicians say something scary such as "it can shoot farther than a mile!" they will try to get rid of it. Regardless if most killings are done by gangs who prefer 9mm at close range.

It's not just rifles, folks... my .500 S&W revolver, and my .50AE Desert Eagle are also banned. Of course, I can choose to register them... which is kind of funny, seeing as how they are ALREADY "registered", by virtue of being a handgun, thereby requiring a "permit to purchase a handgun/form of registration", that took it's own background check, it's own $18 fee, it's own additional $2 fee, and about 2 months to obtain. That's all BEFORE I picked up the handgun(s).

So, now, I get to re-register them, to the tune of $50 each, can never transfer them to another NJ resident, and my heirs have to get rid of them after I die.

Wonderful... I feel SOOO much safer already.

^^^I know there's no 'ban' in the outright sense, but wow! I certainly do feel for you folks in NJ though.

S2723 passed 23/17.

It takes 27 votes in the NJ Senate and 54 votes in the NJ General Assembly to override a Governor's veto. They don't have the votes.

The Republicans voted the way they did because Christie wanted them to vote that way. I don't think Christie is going to sign anything that his own legislators voted against.

I had thought that the .50 BMG ban was going to be signed because ther are only a handful of them in the state, the only place I know of that it can be fired is Fort Dix, and owners could keep them with registration. So I thought this was going to be a bone thrown to the antis. Now the Democrats in the NJ Assembly are at war with the Democrats in the NJ Senate over some of the bills including magazine capacity. Since they're busy battling each other, Christie may not need to throw them any bones.

When Obama visited Asbury Park on Tuesday, Buono (Christie's opponent in the November election) was assigned to the background and needed to stand in line to shake Obama's hand. If Obama thought that she had a snowball's chance in November, she would have been on stage with Christie. She wasn't.

My thought is that Christie can do whatever he wants with these bills and it won't hurt him in November. So my best guess is "conditional veto" for S2723. This is just my reading of the tea leaves, and OCICBW.
