I have finally received my Concealed Carry Permit from the wonderful state of New Mexico. Got it a whole 2 weeks before they "had" to give it to me. Apparently I did everything right. :D So when I get home from work I slap on my 1911 in a owb concelment holster and try to put on one of my baggyer t shirts but I was still printing pretty bad. Plus the 1911 isn't the most comfortable gun to have pressed against your side. So Im looking for a good iwb concelment holster. I have a problem finding shirts that fit my loose. Im 6'4" 250 lbs. And after being washed even XXL shirt tighten up on me. Does anyone have a good holster system to recomend carrying a full size 1911? I know its not an easy gun to conceal but I decided to get licensed on it cause I have a backup one. Does anyone have any experience with the pouch like holster offered by Law Concealement Syestems the LCSII? www.handgunconcealment.com

No experience with that particular holster, but I'll tell you my favorite--the Milt Sparks Versa-Max II.

I frequently carry a Browning Hi-Power, which is about the same size & weight as 1911. That broad hoster with two attach points really works well. Keeps the weight distributed around a wide swatch of your hip, instead of making a pressure point where the gun is. And the two attach points keep it rock-steady.

Two other tips, for what they're worth...

1) Always use a really stiff belt when using an IWB (inside waistband) holster. Preferably a "gun belt" designed just for that. Gun belts riun $35-60, and I'll admit that I have also had good results from off-the-shelf belts, provided they are wide (1" plus) and stiff. I have even had decent results with a cheap Uncle Mike's IWB holster, so long as the belt was good. The Uncle Mike's, like other IWB holsters with only one attach point, kept drifting the grip down toward horizontal, though.

2) The best concealment is a loose, untucked shirt (as you are finding). Or better, yet, a loose vest. In summer, my favorite concealment wear is a tucked-in T-shirt, and an untucked (sometimes unbuttoned) Hawaiian shirt or gaucho shirt. Stylish, but covers ANYTHING. I think I could conceal a Desert Eagle with the hawaiian shirt. In winter, I tent to favor a loose fleece vest.

Practice at home. See if your wife/roommate can "catch" you.

Ive heard good things about Milt sparks and Ill check em out. Does anyone know of a good retail chain that sells good stiff leather belts I could use? Sounds like Im gonna have to buy a new wardrobe to fit my concealement needs.

Your best bet for a decent belt is one of the holster makers. Anything else is a crapshoot, as holster support is the last thing the maker had in mind. Rather than wait for one of the custom makers, Dillon Precision sells some made for CCW off-the-rack.

Hey neighbor,

I'd have to say go with a Milt Sparks IWB, I have a "Watch Six" for my Ruger P-95 and one for my Taurus PT-92, they're not tiny pistols but they are comfortable to carry in those holsters. Speaking of not tiny, I'm 6'5" and 270 lbs; call JC Pennys and ask for they're "Big and Tall" catalog. They have some decent clothing for us "larger" than average people.

Hopefully NM will remedy their minimum age requirement for a Concealed permit, that's one of the things that's blocking our (Texans) CHLs from being recognized in NM.

Another plug for the VM-2, a really great holster. I would not have much confidence in a one size-fits-most pouch; you want a real holster crafted for a specific gun, and it's hard to beat the VM-2 for IWB carry. It costs a bit and take a while to get it, but it is worth every cent and and every minute's wait.

jessuwah,

I know El Paso Saddlery, do you work there? Ill check em out next time I go. Havent been there forever. Im definantly gonna have to rethink what clothes I buy from now on.

treeprof,

Sounds like good advice. Id probably be happier with a fitted holster. Thanks.

I carry my Beretta 96 in a Galco IWB and wear button front shirts with the tail out. Is there a "Casual Male Big and Tall" store in "Cruces? They have the best deals I've found on clothes for the larger than average guy.

Got my NM CHL in March. A couple of weeks ago, I got pulled over by a Bernalillo County Sheriff for having a head light out. I handed her both licenses, DL and CHL, and said; "You probably want to see both of these, and yes I am..."
She looked at the CHL and said; "That's great! You know, it's only going to take ONE of you guys shooting some creep who's trying to rob you at an ATM for all the creeps in town to get the message!"
She readily agreed that a CHL was pretty much an automatic "good guy" card as only the good guys bother to get one. I have not yet met an LEO in NM who was not in favor of CCW, but this Deputy was by far the most enthusiastic.

Next time you're up Albuquerque way Rebel, shoot me an E-mail or PM and maybe we can meet up for a cup of coffee.

I wish I worked at El Paso Saddlery, think of all the goodies I could get with an employee discount ;). It's a shame they don't offer a IWB holster, everthing they do offer is quality at a reasonable price. I'll be stopping there Friday to pick-up a pistol/dress belt.

Hi Rebel Gunman, I have an IWB Bianchi S3 Pistol Pocket and love it. I use it for my Browning Hi-Power and 1911's. I've also used it to CCW my CZ-52 a couple of times now, but it won't snap shut on that gun.

jessuwah, I was surprised at the price of their should holster rig. Looks like a good quality unit, I was expecting $200, but maybe I'm just used to overpriced holster makers.

WonderNine,

the holsters themselves are pretty reasonable especially for the quality of materials and fit, however, if you really want to spend the money checkout the pricing on the handstamping. The fishscale and basket weave aren't too expensive, but when you start with the florals the cost of the holster just about doubles, but man when you hold that holster in your hands and really get a good look at it, it's a portable piece of art.

SMLE,

I'd like to get together sometime, same offer goes when you come down here. Maybe we could get Jessuwah from El Paso to meet up with us too. Thanks for all the good suggestions, I'll be checkin them out.

You must make the necessary changes!!!

Sounds like Im gonna have to buy a new wardrobe to fit my concealement needs.

You are absolutely right there! If you opt to carry concealed then it is up to you to make whatever changes that need to be made to carry comfortably and effectively. Good choices of holster and belt can make almost any gun a good ccw carry. The Milt Sparks is a dream holster as far as concealment is concerned. Spreads out the weight of the gun an is very, very comfortable. I have had good success with holsters made by FIST! http://www.fist-inc.com/ Their holsters are quality and affordable.

I am 6'3" and weigh in at 300 and belts have been somewhat of a problem. One company with which I have had good success is Don Hume.
http://www.donhume.com/. I paraticularly like their leather, velcro belts.

Good shooting;)

Definitely the VM-II.

If you got a Springfield Loaded (or another gun with those ugly front serrations) take a look at the Brommeland Max-Con V. A guy I work with has one of those and likes it. The difference is that the VM-II has the stitching of the reinforced mouth inside the holster, and it can get chewed up by the front serrations. A Max-Con V doesn't have a reinforced mouth. I got the VM-II anyways because I like the fact that it's tuckable.

Wear it at 3:30 - 4:00 if you're a right-hander, and don't worry, nobody's looking at you!
