I have recently acquired a beautiful no.1 in .25-06. My problem is that it is an early gun that was only drilled for the long tube scopes. Not wanting to modify the gun ( drill for new scope mount ) is there some way to mount a newer model scope. I've been searching in vain for an aftermarket rail or some other means to mount it. I found many options for the closer drill pattern, but none for mine. I also noticed that the scope blocks are not the ruger style. Did the early guns come with different blocks?

Hmmm, I dunno what old models were.

Have seen folks w custom bbls set up for Unertl and All American type long scopes.
Is yours a factory long spacing?

IIRC Buehler and others made bases for the Ruger #1 Varmints that took NON Ruger rings. Wonder what bases you have. Can you post a pic of your setup?

Personally, I'd get a period scope and leave the rifle stock, or D&T for shorter spacing.
I know the latter would not leave it original, but #1s are pretty and my concern is a long span custom base messing with the looks.

As you can see it is a beautiful gun and I don't want to mess with the looks, run into clearance problems, etc., so I think I will just go with a vintage long tube scope. Any help in identifying the bases however would be helpful.

Hmmm. I’m new to the No.1, but that doesn’t look “stock” to me. I thought all No.1s had a Ruger rail that housed the rear sight and was cut for Ruger rings. I’m no expert, so I’ll wait to see what others say.

Edit: It is a beautiful gun, by the way.

the bases are for a target type scope(lyman-unertal-redfield), my ruger #1 b has the scope base for regular ruger rings with out a rear or front sights. I can,t tell if your rifle is a #1-V, how about a pic of the barrel from the forend to the end of the barrel.

Looks like the old target blocks for external adj scopes (adjustment with the ring).
Bunch of people sold them, dunno how many made them.

Who were the names back then (time of that rifle)....

Lyman, Redfield, Unertl, Fecker and who knows what Euro ?

My guess would be Lyman or Redfield bases the most common, and dunno if made in house or supplied.

It is definitely a #1-V. I can buy Ruger scope blocks if I need to. I hope that the screw whole spacing is the same. I think you're right Hookeye. I finally found some close up pictures of the old Lyman target scope blocks. Definitely a match.
