I have an E. Arthur Brown 97D falling block rifle in 375 Winchester that I want to mount a Leupold VX-II 1.5-4x28mm scope to. This is an intermediate eye relief scope. The scope rail is not long enough to mount the scope to in the traditional way. I figure my options are to find 1" scope rings with a couple inches of offset, have a custom scope base made that is longer, or just mount both scope rings on the rear portion of the tube.

Is there any reason why the "both scope rings on the rear portion of the tube" wouldn't work?

Are there scope rings with enough offset that I could buy? I tried looking and all I find are AR based cantilever scope mounts that put the scope way too high.

Or am I perhaps better off just sending the scope base and/or rifle to have a longer scope rail fitted? Any recommendations?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Putting both rings on the back is very unlikely to work well, at least long term. It'll act as a lever on the rings with both of them on the back and flex the scope.

Might last awhile, might break the scope on the first shot.

I think the 97ds use the same hole spacing is t/c's but I could be wrong.
Either way, I'm not familiar with any amount that will give you enough eye relief to use an intermediate scope, I think you're best bet would be to pick up a traditional eye relief scope for that rifle.

If you’re determined to use a scout style set up I’d recommend giving Brown a call, they have been incredibly easy to work with IME and might be able to find you a workable solution.

The other option might be an EGW blank rail if you find one matching the receiver contour. Then it’s simply a matter of drilling and countersinking at the correct locations. And EABCO may be able to make one for you.
