I just bought a new Leupold VX-2 3-9X40 scope on a great Cyber Monday deal. Now I need to buy receiver bases and scope rings for my Remington 700 in .270 Win.

I have never understood or liked the dovetail style scope mounts. I have become pretty used to using the weaver/picatinny style rails and mounts on my ARs. I think I would like to use weaver style bases and rings. Or maybe integral scope mounts.

Any advice on a style or brand of scope mounts? Thank you!

On the cheap id recommend weaver two piece bases and quadlock rings in low.

in the 35-50 range I like the Talley lightweight mounts, which are split single pieces, and the DNZ Game Reapers which are one piece.

One alternative might be Leupold QR rings. Especially if you ever consider using more than one scope on a rifle, the same scope on multiple rifles or want to take the scope off for transportation or storage. They hold zero quite well, too.

Like GunAdmirer, I used the DNZ one piece mount on my 700. Can't go wrong. Well used it on my Savage LRP, Ruger 10/22, and .... you get the jest. I like them. I use the tactical mounts. They don't look tactical, its just they have four screws for the rings instead of two.

I ordered the DNZ one piece mount (low). Seems simple to install and rugged. The price is right too.

Good choice. I use DNZ mounts on all my scoped rifles and have never yearned for any other solution. Doubt I will ever go back to a base/two-ring setup again.

I have never understood or liked the dovetail style scope mounts.

When scopes were 1st manufactured they were non adjustable. You adjusted the mounts instead to get them zeroed. A dovetailed mount allowed the rear of the scope to be moved left or right to zero for windage.

Later when the scopes became adjustable it was common for the mounting holes in the receiver to not be drilled in a straight line. The dovetail mounts were retained in order to get the scope aligned with the barrel even though the bases may not be.

With most modern rifles made in the last 60 years or so it is almost unheard of for the mounting holes in a rifle to not be drilled straight. But many hunters continued to use the same mounts grandpa used. If you do get a defective rifle, or are using an older rifle then they are necessary in order to get the scope zeroed.

DNZ is never a bad choice. I think Talley lightweights look a little nicer, but either of those are my top picks unless I want to be able to quickly remove and replace scopes. Then something with rails, either Picatinney, or Weaver style where I can quickly remove the scope and rings and replace that scope with another pre-mounted scope.

I thought the same thing until I mounted scopes at Cabela’s for two years, from 2014-2016. It was surprising, at least to me, how many rifles weren’t drilled straight.

^ yeah i owned one that wasnt straight third rifle i ever bought myself too, i was pretty bummed.

Our OP already made a decision, but wanted to pass along my thoughts to others. I too just bought a Rem 700 and new scope. I used the Talley light weights__this for the second time. They are ridiculously easy to mount, look good, and don't budge once installed. I now have them on a Mach2 and a .243.
