No way in heck there is still an ammo shortage

Prices are falling slowly but surely. Prices won't really start coming down until the ammo that was purchased at a higher price gets sold. No company wants to take a loss.

My personal take is that the days of rapid ammo decreases in price are over and while price decreases will continue, they will (already are) be emall and take longer. That's what worries me personally about projected price increases and conjunction with anything that spooks the populace might spike prices, which will take weeks if not months to come down. Hence, I'm thinking of doing a semi-restock.

Haven't seen 357 in over a year.

Occasional 38 special, like 40 bucks for 50...
In my area, I'm seeing .38spl in a couple flavors from federal, $29.99-$32.99. And this is at the place where ammo was on the expensive side even before things went awry. I found some Buckshot and Slugs for $7.99/5 too and was excited to see it but I got more excited when I found the #8 target loads that I left the store without any 00 or Slugs....

I don't know what to make of things anymore, on the one hand I'm seeing things way improved and not feeling so much pressure to buy it when I see it, thinking it will be there next time anyway, but then I hear from people on here and forums elsewhere who swear it's either A:Not getting any better and the small pockets of supply are a fluke, or B: Only getting marginally better and about to get worse.

I have a nice supply, but I envy the guys who have a nice supply and have a nice supply of reloading components and a means of being self sufficient.... I've been into shooting and collecting for well over a decade, I had every opportunity to get myself set up with some reloading supplies and a couple presses and probably like a million other people, I'm really kicking myself for not doing so. My brother in law had the right idea. I gave him his first gun and shortly after he bought his own .45 and within a month of owning those guns he was up and running and cranking out his own range ammo. I should have done the same at the very start like he did.

Last fall, for numerous popular chamberings (available)…

other than very high prices, some people couldn’t shake their basic fears,

which connected using a Credit Card for online bulk ammo with….the (fictional) “Black Helicopter Syndrome”. For them maybe not then, but in the future…..

Ammo supplies are very spotty here with poor selection. I CAN pick up 9mm and 223 ammo, but not in the bullet weights I want. Cheap FMJ 9mm here is $25-$30 for a box of 50 rounds at the places that have it. 223 is $17-$20 for a box of 20 rounds. No bullet options other than 55 gr FMJ. Those are about the only cartridges available.

Ok in Northern Virginia. The 6 shops and cabelas i go too often... Have so much ammo.. the shelvs have been full for 2 months. Litterally full.. no emty places. One store i went too after the shooting range had so much ammo they had a 20 foot line of packing boxes.. FULL of ammo. I kid you not. FULL of ammo and those boxes were stacked as well.

The local store 5 min from my house.. there entire back wall which is about 10 feet long and 5 feet tall.. is full of ammo.. I also find it odd how 90% of the websites out there say out of stock... but then some will have everything in stock.. and some of those even list how many they have left . Ive seen dozens of types of ammo on those sites where they have 1000-10000 boxes left. How is that possible that a few sites have trucks loads.. and others still claim to be out of stock

I kid you not

Yet ammo prices are still high... Yep i guess we wont ever see a decline in prices
In OK we have ammo. Just not what I want and definitely not at prices I want.
We are keeping 7.62x39 and 7.62x54r on the shelves.
22lr,22mag, 380, 9mm, and 5.56 disappear as soon as it shows up.

Well, the ban on Russian ammo is certain to throw a wrench in things. The low priced steel stuff I'm sure helped drive prices of even the decent brass cased rounds and helped with availability.

Ammoseek was down for awhile and was running super slow last time I checked, so a la COVID I think we're about to see a second wave of the ammo shortage.

Drop yes but I don’t believe it’ll be as low as some expect.

I’ve been saying my buy in price for 9mm promo ammo is $15.00 for 50 but now I believe that may be too optimistic.
No it's not optimistic. I just saw ammo for 15.99 for a Magtech 9mm box of 50. So, while I don't think prices will go down to what they were pre-pandemic, I think your buy in price estimate is on target.

What I have noticed is I can find ammunition at my LGS but not at big box retailers. Of course the price is higher at LGS and that’s why I can find it.

Ammo will end up like cellphones.
They'll drive the price up until they find a spot that the customers balk at,and they'll settle right below it.

One thing is beyond doubt- if Vladimir Putin is very pissed off, and needs the revenue from US sales of Russian ammo,

Putin is capable of finding a way to “persuade” Sleepy Joe to reverse the Ban on Russian ammo.
He's far smarter than Ice Cream Joe.

Multiple distributors sold all their Russian 7.62x39, possibly .223 other chamberings, Hours ago.
Even Ammoman and AKstuff (Oleg had Klimovsk) sold out.

I HIGHLY doubt Vlad is even batting an eyelash at this. Much less considering the huge capitulations he’d have to make to end this ban. It absolutely not in his nature and would make him look like a fool to his people, something he would never risk.

It’s out there, just being bought by people that don’t intend to shoot it, rather scalped to others, that include many buying it without the intention to shoot in rather “just have it on hand”.

I had a fellow come to the shop just yesterday and tell me he couldn’t find 50AE or 500 S&W anywhere. I pulled out my phone and googled it for him, showing him who had it in stock. He continued asking about me reloading it for him, I then asked how much he shot, shifting the conversion to “is reloading right for you”. He said, “Oh, I’ve never shot either but only have a few hundred of each.” I told him to quit thinking about it and I’ll remind him to stock up once prices are sane again vs him contributing to the dwell time of the current situation.

If you don’t need it, don’t buy right now. If you do, you are asking to pay too much, unless your one of the entrepreneurs making a profit on others ill advised buying decisions.

Some food for thought. Hopefully this link works. If not, basically, guy bemoans a silly rumor that he feels will only worsen the already spotty availability of ammo back in 1993. This was around the same time I inherited a new-to-me RL550 and primers were hard to come by, just as I was getting back into reloading on a fancy progressive machine.

The point is, we've been stuck in this cycle forever. I'm sure there are even older posts that demonstrate this, as is I'm sure there are sentiments predating the internet itself worrying over the same thing. The other part of this is that in the U.S., it's silly to stress over a perceived shortage of any consumer good, be it toilet paper, beer, guns, ammo, or whatever you fancy. It's all temporary. Where there's a demand, someone will always fill the supply.

What I don't know about retail and marketing would fill a book, but ...

My guess is that they will keep the prices up there until folks stop buying. It takes more than one full shelf to end a panic. When people start to see those shelves staying full for a while, the panic will ease and the prices will come down.

That's my opinion, and it's worth exactly what you paid for it.

There was a hell of a lot of people who bought a lot of guns, who only got a box or two of ammo for them. If they all go after what comes to the shelves, it might be a while.

Im hoping that most of them do what a lot did last time, as the panic dies down, they just turn around and dump the guns, and for very reasonable prices for those of us who have waited. :)

Literally an hour ago a coworker sent me pic a from the local sporting goods store. Only ammo on the shelf was 36 boxes of 7mm Mag at 74.99 a box.

That said I’ve been seeing more lately, but not by much.
