i normally stock pile ammo when ever i can, i was really looking for ideas on makeing a millitary ammo box into a storage unit for my boxed ammo and still be able to keep it somwhat organized, i figured i could put a couple of wooden shelfs in it, but i am not sure how well it would work out, any ideas on a good looking ammo storage container, id really perfer something that didnt obviously look like an ammo container

not 100 percent if this is the place for the thread, but it looks to be the best

I currently store my ammo in a couple of old chest of drawers in the bsmnt. I also have an old stereo cabinet that I use for tumbler storage, just removed one shelf, plenty of room. I also have a couple of ammo cans I store bullets in, my above the bench cabinet won't hold them all. I was going to put in some shelving, but didn't like the ones available, want to eventually close in the reload room, won't have room then. In the bsmnt, its always cool, no humidity, so no rust. Does me fine for now.

Short of buying Pelican/Storm/Hardigg cases, you're sort of at an impasse for secure ammunition storage solutions. I would recommend just buying a bunch of mil-surp .50BMG ammo cans and using them to hold separate ammo. I have a bunch of ammo cans and plastic waterproof ammo boxes. I never mix ammo-I only store one caliber per can.
If you can find a couple 48rd 40mm grenade ammo cans for MK19 usage, get them. They're perfect for large quantities. If you want them to look less "military", you can spray paint them. Even easier, paint some plastic ammo boxes red with black tops and slap on some Craftsman stickers.

about how many boxes of 12ga bird shot can you fit in that type of container, i keep a couple hundred on hand, because sometimes i cant actually find the stuff at a store, you know how it is, a new president comes along, and everyone stockpiles on ammo

ultradoc, why and how did you vacum pack your ammo, is it to keep moister out, or what?

GI ammo cans are good enough for me. I have some ammo that my Dad gave me that has been in the bottom of a closet for 20+ years. 7.62, 22lr, 38 special...a wide variety of bulk and quality ammo. It has fired fine, so I don't think it matters too much unless you're going to store it for 50+ years. I can't seem to keep it on hand long enough to worry about long term storage. My "evil assault clips" keep devouring my ammo like ravenous beasts. :uhoh:

Been using GI ammo cans for years without any problems. They are plentiful at Army surplus stores, gun shows (though they inflate the prices there IMHO), and yes even online at CTD and Midway, etc. I prefer buying FTF so I can check the seals and inspect for any hinge or rust issues.

GI steel .50 cal ammo cans are the best there is for storing ammo.
That's what they were designed for.

In the event of a house fire, the lid seal will melt out and the can will release pressure, but contain all the flying primers and scrap metal.

I bought a heavy-duty steel shelf unit at Home Depot to store them on.

The white plastic bakery frosting buckets are for storing empty shotgun hulls.

RC, you are one well stocked fella
Take note of the labels. First time you grab a box and head off to shoot, only to discover you grabbed a whole bunch of the wrong caliber...you'll realize what a great idea that is.

I absolutely agree:) I'm not as well stocked, or as it appears organized, as RC but my ammo cans are all marked (with permanent marker no less) with the caliber that resides in that can. You may ask why a permanent marker? Well printer ink fades, labels peel or fall off after a spell but those "Sharpie" pen inks stay forever :)
