How do you store your ammo boxes? Currently, they are on a shelf in the (dry) basement. Keep in mind, I have no more room in my safe and do not plan on getting another. Should it be placed in a wooden box, metal container, etc?

I store about 9K rds in a defunct side-by-side refrigerator in my basement. Right next to my reloading area. Powder and primers fit perfectly in the shelves in the doors. I replaced the wider shelves on the fridge side with rubber coated wire rack (Home Depot) mounted on 90* brackets to handle the weight. I think it's kinda neat having the light come on in my ammo storage cabinet whenever I open the door! ;)

My basement is nice and dry, but I have a dehumidifier down there for the higher humidity summer months. Also have dessicant in the "fridge", which I bake twice a year. The temp down there stays right at 67-68* year round, so I don't worry about condensation from temp changes.

Also good for storing wine. (The basement, not the fridge...after all; "Alcohol and gunpowder don't mix!")

I store mine in used USGI ammo can's. I get them from the flea market for $5.00 each.

My rifle and pistol ammunition is stored in GI cans and old school lockers with shelves installed. Lockers also work well for gunsafe overflow--not theft proof but likely to discourage casual visitors. Padlocks keyed alike.

Sadly, shotgun ammo is stored in cardboard cases on floor. Now that you mention it, it's time to get more lockers or other, better accommodations for it. I'll at least perch it on some cinder blocks for now. The real shame is that it is left over--should have shot it all this year.

Little drawers I bought from Target. I don't have much room so I don't keep more than I need on hand. When I get more room I will store more ammo.

We've got boxes in our ammo cans and our walk in closet shelves, depending on the calibers and frequency of use.

On top of my gunsafe, and in ammo cans in my BR closet.... no basements here in Texas, and no climate control in the garage.

Ammo cans, the Frankford Arsenal styrofoam and cardboard boxes, and the reusable containers for food like Gladwear and Ziploc containters. They go on shelves, the living room and bedroom floor, and in cabinets ;)

I've just installed more shelving and with the rainy season coming I'll be moving my reloading area from the basement to an unsused upstairs room since my basment occasionally floods.

Once that move is complete I'll have more than enough shelves, drawers and cabinets for all of my guns, ammo, reloading equipment and supplies. Just one more step tward getting the house clean an organized :)

I really take care of my .223 ammunition that is destined for long-term storage (10 or more years).

All the factory loads are taken from the boxes but kept in the plastic fastener thingys (these thingys are good to hold on to). I tape these together back to back, then group several together and seal in Zip Locks. Then it goes into a styrofoam cooler. The cooler gets stashed away in a wooden box in the basement ... and that's that.

The .357 and 12 Gauge ammo is never stored. It is kept on hand in the first floor gun cabinet for the 'quick and ready'.

I store ammo in several ways.
my 'stockpiles' of Mil Surp stuff is all in ammo cans, in a closet
The hunting ammo is stored in a locked metal cabinet
Ready use stuff, that is several loads for each of my CCW pistonls, in in baggies, in a cardboard box next to the pistol safe.
Shotgun ammo is stored in 50 Cal ammo cans.

Plastic ammo cans w/ O-ring type seal. Bought a multi-set of locks so that one key will unlock any box. Stored in closet in utility room inside house so that it is in a climate controlled environment.

.223 in ammo cans....

Some in strippers and bandos, others the boxes themselves...

I pack them in lots of 500 in Zip Lock freezer bags. These are stored in a plastic storage drawers according to caliber.

Some time ago, I started this thread about a DIY ammo locker project. I think several members have followed suit, or are planning to. My finished (and "loaded") locker:

I have at least 2 ammo cans for each caliber. depending on how much ammo I use or find a good deal on. some are 30 cal some are 50 and some are 20mm cans. I will have one full and silica pack for long term storage. the other one will have my consumable ammo. when the consumable can is empty than I exchange the two cans, refill the empty (buy new) add a dried or new silica pack and start shooting up the next can.

Yeah, ammo cans. I do have the odd box or two, here and there, for 'contingencies'.

Preacherman - tre bien, and an excellent example of Thos. Augustine's 'tranquility of order' ;) :D
