How do you store your ammo?

Having learned in the Military that temperature extremes are BAD for ammo storage, I keep most of my ammo in plastic coolers. I have several coolers for different ammo - shotgun (large cooler), smaller coolers for handgun ammo. When going to a match in the summer I take one of the coolers for ammo in the car. I know the ammo really does stay cooler - in a cooler when the car temp is well above 100 deg.

The old refrig. is a great idea, I will have to see if I can do the same.

under the bed, between the matress, in the closet, in the glove box, over the fridge, in the shed, in the bunker, in ammo boxes, suit cases, tupperware, buckets... :what:

five gallon buckets and paint cans.

I use the argon tank from the welder to blow out most of the air and then snap a lid on not sure if it works but the brass does not tarnish just sitting here,

Bulk loaded handgun ammo is stored in GI cans or in plastic bags like ZipLocks. This is the 9mm, the 45 ACP, and my 38 Special ammo. My 358 Mag and 44 Mag are usually stored in the plastic 50 or 100 count plastic ammo boxes, and only on occasion in the styrofoam trays and cardboard boxes. Sometimes I will put all these plastic boxes into a cardboard ammo box picked up from the gun shop before they toss it into the trash.

My factory 7.62X39 is stored in the original boxes it was shipped in. However, I do have one GI can filled with this stuff which I call my road trip can.

Well, it's hot here and there are mandatory storage laws....

The rimfire ammo is in a 'below slab' floor safe and the centrefire handgun ammo in a 6 mm plate steel safe dyna-bolted to the slab, while the rifle ammo is in a 10 mm plate safe also bolted to the slab. It's about 10 degrees Celsius cooler in the floor safe, but the buggers are a pain to install! From my experience, I believe the rimfire ammo is more sensitive to heat.

The Northern Territory also places limits on the quantity of ammo allowed in possession. It's good to "spread it around" a bit. ;)

Preacherman, that is a beautiful creation...
like a Japanese garden for shooters!

I store bulk ammo in GI ammo cans as others have stated. I also have a few hundred rounds of each caliber that I keep in a cabinet in my office where it is easy to get to.

Most of it's in military surplus ammo boxes. None of them labeled as to which of 7 or 8 different cartridges are in which can.

I need more ammo. I need more cans.

Ammo Storage

We took our que from long term grain storage. #1 enemy of ammo is moisture. #2 is oxygen. Several sites now sell oxygen absorbers(small packets 1 1/2 x 2 inches like sugar packs) do google search. Went to paint supply store bought 1 Gal. metal & 5 Gal. plastic containers. Rented large nitrogen tank from welding supply(torch cart size) $45-30 days $250 deposit
process takes 2 people. place ammo in containers do all at once is easier than 1 at a time have approaite amount of oxygen asborbers ready for each container. I placed a birthday candle in top of container with flame just below rim. Rig a length of tubing from nitrogen tank that will reach to bottom of your containers.( i used my acetelyne regulator from my from my torch with an old torch hose) place hose in bottom of container turn on gas SLOWLY! Nitrogen will displace oxygen in container you can tell when container is full when candle goes out. Immeadiatly pull out hose & have partner throw in absorbers & slap on lid. Fresh ammo stored in this manner kept in underground storage or approaite cool place will last up to 50 years!
Also use foodsaver vacuum system. I have several extra ammo clips with appropriate # of rounds in bags(not in clip so springs stay good) with absorbers in bags stored in many places. You can even do guns this way. No oxygen No rust. Old saying is true DO NOT KEEP ALL YOUR COOKIES IN ONE BASKET! When the Man comes for your guns he will wait till your gone so as to prevent an armed confortation with you. Hope this helps. God Bless America Eagle357

A friend went Preacherman's route... but he couldn't find any surplus cabinets.
