If you don't have the money for a Garand in hand right now, you might want to look into the CMP and get set up with the qualifications to purchase one from them. It is pretty easy, but requires a little time. They are good source of ammo as well.

I have to agree, there is something wonderful about a Garand. First time I shot one, I thought there was no way it weighs about 9 lbs. It balances so well, it felt like much less. Maybe it only weighs 9lbs on a scale. When shooting, it feels more like 7 lbs.

Love the sights, too. We sure got those right.

By accident or on purpose, John Garand created one of the best shooting rifles ever. With its muzzle-heavy balance, it just hangs on target. That same characteristic makes it a smooth-swinging rifle on moving targets. And the sights are superb.

The main down side to the en bloc is that blind magazines are harder to clear in caseof a jam. The plus side is that dirt won't enter from below.

Sounds logical, Grendel, but if I shoot any corrosive, I'll use the ammonia compound. Davy and Daniel may not have had windex, but they also did not have electricity, running water, or the Garand. My guess is they would have used them if available. Water alone may be good, but who is to say that a little ammonia mixed in isn't better?

shllyshny, it's called Chemisty 101. The corrosion is caused by potassium salts, and water dissolves and washes them away. Ammonia has no effect whatsoever. As for Davy, Daniel, et al., their ammo didn't have primers, much less corrosive primers.

Does CMP have anything left other than the Greek returns?

CZguy, there's nothing wrong with the Greek returns. I have one, HRA service grade. It was incredibly grimy, but it shoots inside 2 MOA. The stock was like new and draw many admiring looks now that it's been cleaned up.

Rosstradamus, I have to take you to task for the last post. D.Boone's rifle dor have a primer, the flint!!! :D
