Non 1911 45's

Who makes 45 autos in platforms other that 1911? I was asked that this morning, and had to give the answer "I don't know/not sure". I hate giving that answer, so now I have to find out......:)

Smith and Wesson M&P, Springfield XD and XDM, Glock, Ruger, Sig Sauer/Sig Arms, HK...the short of it, there is a whole plethora of non-1911 .45 autos out there.

Just about every pistol manufacturer makes a .45 ACP. If you can think of the name of a brand, with the exception of Rorbaugh (not entirely sure they don't), they make a .45 ACP.

S&W, Glock, Sig, HK, Ruger, Bersa, Taurus, etc.

13 + 1 with a Match Grade barrel and interchangeable backstraps to make the pistol fit your hand like a glove. Don't overlook the SA XDm in .45 ACP. In my research of non 1911 .45s the XDm came out on top and I bought it. It was a wise decision!;)

I like eaa if not a 1911 the elite has great 1911 like features but its not a 1911.

S&W Model 457 7+1 single stacker. I've had it about ten years and I love it. Accurate, dirt reliable (never jammed no matter what I feed it), solid, tough, outstanding carry gun.

How depressing, that was going to be my next pistol....
Do you have any other M&Ps and if so, how does the trigger compare to them. I love the trigger on my M&P40c (short and light for a striker-fired pistol) and was really hoping it was comparable.

But yes, there are a plethora of other .45acp pistols out there that aren't 1911s. The two .45acp pistols I have are 1911s and I've been tossing around the idea of a M&P45c or Ruger P345.

I went .45 shopping about a year and a half ago. Thought I'd bring home a 1911, wound up with a Glock 36. The 30 was too fat for my liking.

I like my 36 enough that I haven't been able to justify buying another .45 OR another Glock. It's the red headed stepchild of the Glock line since it doesn't share magazines with other Glocks...but I only own one Glock. Besides, my Ruger p-series mag doesn't fit into my LCP, and I still like both of those guns;)

Great carry piece. Not the be all end all, but I like mine well enough:)

Not to make this an M&P thread, but my M&P45 mid sized had a fairly stiff but manageable trigger. I did go for an Apex Tactical kit to make it have a great trigger.

I have an m&p40 as well and the 45 was very slightly stiffer than the 40 from the factory.

+1 on the Apex sear. It will really transform the pistol's performance.

My M&P45 came with 7+ lbs factory trigger. I did a trigger job based on PDF posted on Burwell gunsmithing and now it's more like 4 lbs. With the trigger job, by far the best striker trigger I have shot so far.

The heavier factory trigger did affect the shot group accuracy. Post trigger job, it is now the most accurate semi-auto I shot over the years.

i also had an mp40c that came with a much lighter trigger pull. s&w shows on their website that the 45 m&p's come with heavier pulls for some weird reason.

either way, even if you put in an apex sear or do a trigger job, the trigger break itself will be lighter, but the reset still won't be as perceptible as glock's. if you can live with that, not a bad gun at all.

I really like my Ruger P-97. Utterly reliable and accurate. The trigger, on mine at least, is nothing like the horror stories around here.

This is a P90 Ruger in 45 ACP that I've had since they first came out. No telling how many rounds that I've put thru it. It's shoot anything that's 45 ACP.

Viking499,

Good question. There are lots of non-1911's out there. Some of the best for feeding and reliability have to be the HK's (yes I have one), and the Sig P-220 (had a couple).

The Witness 45 feeds virtually any bullet reliably except the venerable 200 gn LSWC bullet. The Smith "7" and "9" series are also excellent, but the 7's are out of production.

The CZ-97 is great, but it does not feed some HP's reliably and the out of the box SA trigger is pretty mundane.

A Glock 21 is a wonderful pistol as well and deserves serious consideration.

I'm considering a .45 that's not a 1911. Poly would be OK as long as recoil is not made worse. (not interested in Glocks) Possibly an XDm as I already have one in 9mm. I saw a few used police department 4566TSWs at a gun show yesterday for about $440.00, so I'm considering them. Sig P220 sounds real good, except I'm hoping to find something less than $600.

I know that all of the pistols mentioned above are pretty much full size guns. Are there any that are slightly smaller, say 3.8 to 4 inch barrel? Something that could be carried if necessary. Carry is not a high priority as I live in the People's Republic of Maryland, but I have a Utah non-res permit that allows me to carry in surrounding states. I currently have a 3913 for such occassions.

Are there other pistols I should be considering? Thanks for any input.
