I am making a list of things noobs say or do at the range. Please add to this list. A few examples are:

Calling magazines "clips".
Spinning and slinging the cylinder shut on revolvers.
Calling Desert Eagles "Deagles".
Trying to catch the "bullet" as it is ejected from the ejection port.

Please post any others you know of. Keep it simple. Thanks.

Of course there's the dangerous stuff like never being able to keep their fingers off the trigger or always trying to lower a 1911 hammer to half-cock instead of using the safety.
I saw a guy shoot a hole in the floor of my local gun shop doing that. :what:

The "clip" thing annoys the heck out of me, btw.

Ooh, I thought of another one. How about when they say "chamber" instead of "cylinder" for a revolver.

As somewhat of a newb (I know safety basics, but still would say complete newb if it wasn't for the fact I would know enough to not end up firing a gun until I meant too :) I guess some people make me look like I know a decent bit), I can agree that some of those things are dumb even for a noob (like half-cocking instead of using the safety :) if you don't know those basic safety rules you shouldn't be handling one)

But as far as using the correct terminology, even though I can understand it being anoying, sometimes we just need to learn.

I've learned a ton so far in being here the past week, like not to call a magazine a clip (I never put the thought in that because of the spring it is a magazine) and after hearing it spoke of and explained I learned. Everyone was a newb at somepoint.

Yeah, nothing against noobs, we were all there once. Today's noob is tomorrow's guru gun nut.

We're just tryin' to have a little fun at your expense.

How about walking to the counter and asking to buy a box of "Bullets" (referring to rounds/ammo).

A few more I see are:

-Sticking a pistol down the front of your pants like Sylvester Stallone in Cobra.
-Firing two pistols at one time. One in each hand.
-Blowing the small amount of smoke coming from inside the barrel.
-Attempting to shoot the poles the targets are posted to.
-Firing a rifle or shotgun with one hand. Arm out and extended.

Ok, you can have some fun at my expense, I'm a good sport. Ummm... now that I think of it that sounded a little bad :) .

Gotta love this! My "civvie" friends say "clip" to our Infantry and Marine friends to piss them off

They rent a 9mm usually a berettas and glocks and procede to send a lifesise badguy target to the end of the range. Then shoot as fast as they can get away with. The targets come back with patterns, not groups. They never figure out why they dont get better. If there is a group I just keep a eye on them. Just one or two or a guy and wife or girlfriend, I hope never both at the same time could get tense at a range" I will ask if they want to shoot my 1911 then throw some subtle "advice". The women in this sititation tend to do better with the 1911 then the guys. They slow down and concentrate. No ego involved.

I wouldn't be too rough on 'em. Unless they have a father or some other mentor that can teach 'em the basics, they wind up starting with what they get off TV and movies. Help 'em out. And as for the misuse of the word "clips," yes, it's annoying when you know better, but there are MUCH dumber things to do in this world. I have a feeling that eventually, calling magazines "clips" will become normal use just because that's the way language works, even if it IS historically wrong.
I'm not gonna do it though. :)

I've been shooting since I was 7 years old (35 now), and have had dozens of guns all my life. I still buy boxes of "bullets."

Around here that is common slang, and if you ask for rounds/ammo, they tend to look at you like you are some "Rambo-wannabe."

When in Rome....

All the best!

Got to admit........ the clip vs magazine thing I am guilty of, and as a HUGE military history buff, I know better, lol.
My dad did it, and so did his dad, (both in military btw) so naturally, I was messed up since childhood. I still catch myself from time to time, lol.

Well, I'll be honest...back when I had some private land to shoot on, some friends and I tried the two pistols at one time (9mm & .38spl) and holding the gun sideways, just to see how bad those methods suck. We were right, they really suck!

Wasn't there a news article about a year ago about some European (think it was Eastern European) firearms instructor teaching military or LEO (can't remember which) to fire handguns sideways?

According to the article, IIRC, his logic had been that the US movie industry had money to have access to the best firearms experts, and therefore were consulted on the cutting-edge of firearms tactics.

According to the article, he realized his mistake, admitted it, and expressed quite a bit of embarassement.

I'll see if I can't dig up that article.

Trying to catch the "bullet" as it is ejected from the ejection port.

What's wrong with that? I do it most of the time when I unload. It beats bending over and picking it up off the ground.

Damn noobs. Let's all make fun of them! Maybe if we insult them enough, they'll leave us alone, so we can enjoy our eliteist sport all by ourselves. I know I could probably take the time to educate these new people, but why would I waste my time with that, when I could make fun of them on the internet instead?

:uhoh:

I don't care what the NOOBS say, as long as they don't do anything dangerous at the range or at home.

I've had to learn all the basics from my friend, his dad, and THR. All good teachers. Too often I've had to pack up and leave because some che-shirt wearing kid shows up and starts showing his mental deficincies...
sweeping the entire firing line with his loaded AR when ceasefire is called (rather than put gun down on bench and walk away)
Sideways shooting his glock:banghead:
bump-firing until the R.O. tells him that he shouldn't:fire:
Shooting my targets because he thought the range set up all the stuff for you:scrutiny:

Then there were the idiots who decided to shoot skeet at my un-official shoot spot...they parked 20 feet behind us and started to use their pickup as a bench:cuss: :fire: Then they were throwing the skeet so they arched TOWARDS my group:fire: Then genius pulled out his hi-power and started to shoot at the skeet as his buddy threw them. Luckily there is a ridge that to shoot over would have required a 60 degree angle...how far will a 9mm from a hi-power travel? That's when we got the hell outta there-I didn't want to be around when Darwin showed up.

Agree.

We all started out not knowing anything and had to learn and be matriculated into whatever we do, and will continue to do in life.

I know I appreciated my Mentors & Elders taking the time, and having the patience to Mentor me, and others like me.

My Role is to pass forward as passed to me.

When I was young I knew everything about everything, the older I get, the more I realize how dumb I am . May I never stop getting dumber. -anon

I have one complaint about them. Not supervising their SO at the range. Had some kid out their with his G/F shooting a brand new .40. He does the pull the trigger as fast as you can thing, reloads and hands the gun to her. She shoots then spins around because she's pleased she hit the target. She spins my way, finger on trigger, gun pointing right at my head. I jump back fast as my fat ass can muster and tell her "point that thing DOWN-RANGE!". She looks hurt and B/F steps up to tell her range protocol. How about telling your SO about this BEFORE you put the gun in her hand?

A humorous, but stupid one, from a month ago. Older fella just getting into muzzle-loaders is trying out his new .50 cal T/C Omega. He's sitting behind the firing line on the benches messing with this thing cuz it didn't go off. I glance back his way just in time to see him punching the rod down the bore and the gun goes click!KA-BOOM!! As the smoke is clearing I expect to see what's left of his hand pumping blood but amazingly all his digits are intact and he's got some powder burns and is basically okay except for the growing stain in his pants. Above him in the roof is a nice new .50 caliber hole and he's now cussin' cuz he's coming down from the shock of what just happened. I tell him "I hate it when that happens!". We never did find that rod and he's decided he's gonna stick to centerfire and calls it a day. I breathe a sigh of relief and think to myself I need to pony up and join a private range.

Clips for revolvers. I know, I know - there's such an animal as moonclips (which I adore, BTW) - but these folks don't know about them. Only 33rd Level Master Masons, Bilderburgs, and the Brotherhood of the Garand Thumb know about those. Clips for .38 special revolvers are always interesting...

6_gunner: ...Ooh, I thought of another one. How about when they say "chamber" instead of "cylinder" for a revolver.

:what: Wouldn't they be correct? :what:
A revolver cylinder has 5-9 chambers depending on caliber and model.
