Northern Illinois University Shooting

She called for metal detectors at all doors and entrances of every dorm and every learning hall at colleges. Basically said since we were able to do it with airports and court houses, why not colleges. Her guest remarked, "Well in an ideal world we could"...to that effect.

so instead of the victims being inside a room, they can all be standing in a neat line in a hallway or doorway... much easier to hit your target that way...

Besides the tragedy for the victims and their families, this is a tragedy for the "family" of responsible gun owners. Supreme Court justices watch the news, too. Don't think that they make decisions in a vacuum. Events like this make it difficult for them to rule against the ability of jurisdictions to regulate the RKBA.

Let them take the low-road and the first swing.

If we come out first we're just "crazy gun nuts politicizing a tragedy." We can refute any of their arguments with hard facts. We've done it before and we're going to have to keep doing it.

If the objective is to restore the Second Amendment at the academy, the evidence indicates strongly that the strategy has been ineffective.

Kiss your guns goodbye : (

Never.

Not to belttile this, but how many people died today because of careless or drunk driving? How many died from getting beat up by their boyfriend? How many homeless died today because they sleep on the street?

The point is, nobody cares because the masses believe what the news tell them...or at least are sheltered from all that is not on the news.

This kid probably grew up being told "No means No", "If you are offended by something, report it as harassment" and "Everyone wins at life".

Here's a news flash you won't see on FOX, this no dodgeball, can't hurt anyones feelings, make the mass stop if you're offended, you can't do anything that may offend others is sheltering our kids so they don't know how to react to life.

That bully bugging you? Get in a fight and get a tooth knocked out...you'll learn something.

Always picked last in dodgeball or are always it? Find a different talent, play the violin and be world famous.

...I now retire my soapbox for this commercial.

I still wonder what role the media plays in shootings like this?

I wonder if people would still do things like this if the media did not put such a human face on incidents like this by showing footage of the victims and telling the story behind the killer?

Why doesn't the media have one of their desk reporters talk about it and report it as it really it, a sadistic crime against innocent people. Instead they make a huge deal about it and I almost get the feeling that they like this stuff and want it to keep happening It almost like gossip to them or something, just like Paris Hilton or Britney Spears, they don't know how to tell people "that person is messed the f*#@ up and you don't want to be like them or everyone will hate you."

qoute from Fox news

He said 911 calls started coming in at 3:06 p.m. and police were on scene 29 seconds later.

"Twenty-nine seconds was not fast enough," Grady said..

Kind of makes the ccw argument easier.

It's funny you mention DUI...

Whenever we see the tragic story about 5 kids killed on the way to Prom due to DUI, it's never a story about the evil, insidious auto manufacturing lobby, there is never a push to allow parents to sue GM or Honda or Ford, never a story about changing all driving laws etc. Instead it is about punishing the individual, the individual choice to drive intoxicated...you see where I am headed with this...

I feel this will be a sad, sad year for all law abiding gun owners....

That bully bugging you? Get in a fight and get a tooth knocked out...you'll learn something.

Yes. You will learn to be a victim. You will learn to fear bullies. You will learn how much it costs to have reconstructive dental work.

Somehow, knowingly volunteering to get beat up by a bully sounds like a stupid idea.

Did anyone see the CNN online story today? Below the photo of the scene, it read, "Are you there? Send Text,Videos, or photos" Scumbag Vultures!

This is not a surprise. NIU has it's own police force and they are spread out over the campus. The distance from the NIU cop shop to Cole hall is at most a quarter of a mile. However, I think twenty-nine seconds is pretty hard to beat. Call a cop at home and see how long it takes. NIU is a University, not an armed camp.

Chauncy? I have a short question for you. How many did our soldiers kill over there today, this week, this month? If we are killing at the rate of 100 to 1, I am proud and pleased with our soldiers in the war zone.
In our colleges, how many bad guys are we killing? Ten in one year, and we would NEVER see this happen again. I think we (students, or citizens) need the ability to shoot them down like dogs, with no consequences.

I'm sorry, but I don't read you.

My rant isn't about our combat effectiveness, or even about the question of the wars we are fighting. My rant is in reference to the relative value we seem to place, as a society, on the lives of people we can identify with (college kids) and people we can't identify with (active duty service members).

How much pork did congress spend last year? and at the same time, some E-3has to put his family on food stamps when it's time to deploy.

what we pay and the benefits we give veterans when they EAS is a joke. these people essentially gave up 4 good income-earning years of their life, to protect us, and when they get out they get an underfunded GI bill and a slap on the back "now go pay taxes, and oh, btw you are too old to be on your parents' health insurance while you go to college"

yeah, sure, shoot these trenchcoat idiots when they open fire in a classroom. but how many kids in there were old enough to own a handgun anyway? the people that should have been in that classroom, armed, trained and experienced were more college students with a DD214 in their pocket.

I was at work in DeKalb when this happened, not more than a couple of miles away. I know dozens of students at NIU, and just seeing the pictures of the same campus I've walked many times myself is a strange feeling. This is indeed some really really surreal ****.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms sent 15 agents to the scene, according to Thomas Ahern, a spokesman. He said information about the weapons involved would be sent to the ATF's national database in Washington and given urgent priority.

It takes five (5) ATF agents to write down the serial number of each of the 3 guns and call it in??? It's like the number of Norweegens needed to change a light bulb.

Or is it, one to investigate and fourteen to hand out press releases?

I think twenty-nine seconds is pretty hard to beat.

But still too slow.

If someone doesn't start shooting back after the second shot, the killing will be over before any cop gets there.

I suspect 29 seconds is from dispatch to the "on scene" radio report which puts the cop outside in his car with no idea exactly where he now needs to go. I'm sure it was well over 2 MINUTES before a badge made it into the room.

Eric F

I am disturbed buy the shooting and the complaining and the general lack of care concern and thoughts for those killed and or injured. It is ok to talk about the gun control issues and such but even if you do not post it please just take a minute and give a prayer for those killed and injured. Just my .02 thanks

I, frankly, am disturbed at your lack of anger at the politicians who create these Victim Disarmament Zones and Target Rich Environments for madmen. Where, sir, is your outrage?

Where is your steel willed determination to make sure this can never happen again at any school, mall, post office or business?

Where is the OUTRAGE of the people Illinois and the rest of the Nation at the Brady bunch for fomenting LIES...the kind of lies which lead to mass killings?

We all have sympathy for the victims. We should also express our rage! Our rage should be directed at the politicians who have created this system of Government Mandated Victim-hood.

To add to the above post

Just feeling bad for the victims is the job of the anti's who do nothing or feel they can do nothing to prevent these kinds of events.

Of course or thoughts are with the victims but being angry and being sad can go hand in hand.

I attended geology/geophysics grad school at NIU in '04-'05 and left early due to a not so stellar GPA (and make a few bucks out west). The worst I head to deal with then were the Pikes starting a barfight on any given weekend.

I'd might know the teaching assistant who was injured. This is truely a sad said day as my parents and a few aunts attended NIU.

It's a shame only one of the 150 to 200 people in that room had a gun. :fire:

University President John G. Peters said six students — four women, the shooter and another man — were killed in what he described as a “very brief, rapid-fire assault.”
Thanks Peters!

I see a lot of anit-gun legislation in our states near future thanks to this statement, 'rapid-fire assault'.

Shooter kills self on stage after 'rapid-fire' assault in N. Illinois U. lecture hall "From msn.com"

Its started already :cuss:

I'm sure it was well over 2 MINUTES before a badge made it into the room.
I'm sure it was far longer than that based on videos from all the other mass shootings.

I feel terrible for the families and parents who lost loved ones, I can't imagine ....

Well I have already fired off an email to my campus provost about this. We are a small Community college campus. But, out of the three police we have only one could ever run up the stairs. Makes me feel real safe sitting like a duck in class.
