Not again.......! Feral Hog Control in East Texas

OUCH
1 oz. slugs are brutal for me, what could 2+ oz. feel like :what:

It makes your eyes water. Shotgun is pretty light weight also...which doesn't help matters. I'm not particularly recoil sensitive, but these will get your attention. You KNOW the punishment is coming...so you'll want to pick and hit your target(s). That's why I elected not to shoot the single small hog. They will be back and eventually I'll get a crack at a group of them. They bunch together very tightly at times.

Flint, I have tried that ammo before. It actually did not group well from my shotgun and I gave up on it. I would often get 2 close and 1 flyer. At the time, I was considering it as a home defense round. You are right, it isn't a normal load. The recoil, as I recall, was quite stout.

It's meant to be shot from a shotgun with a very tight choke. Then it performs pretty well (tight pattern). Of course, what I am shooting it from is Cylinder Bore (open choke) so I have to be within 25 yds. or the pattern is unacceptable. I can shoot through multiple hogs with my SOCOM and often do...but I've been wanting to try the 'Tri-Ball' for some time now and this stand is perfect for that purpose.

For me...it's more a novelty round than anything sensible. I rarely have a situation where I catch hogs out in one of the pastures and can get more than one shot. Usually they are not more than 20 yds. from thick cover and one shot is pretty much it...so I have to make the most of it.

I get more hogs trapping and snaring than shooting....but I'll use any and all means.

Need to catch them bunched up together like this:

Maybe go sit for awhile this evening depending on the wind direction and chances for rain.

The above would be an ideal scenario for the shotgun with Dixie Tri-Ball.

Crazy hogs. Sat on a stand until 10:30 last night, nothing but one raccoon showed up. Odd... because a group of hogs had been coming in a little after 9:00 p.m. the previous few nights. We had a cool front blow through the other day and really drop the temperatures. Figured the hogs would be moving and the mosquitoes not. :)

Went and pulled the game camera from that stand this afternoon and the hogs were feeding this morning while I was out mowing pasture not 250 yds. away. I don't know if someone tipped them off...or what? You just can't win sometimes.

Sorry guys, been very busy the last 45 days with one thing or another. I appreciate your concern @Ole Joe Clark, I am fine.

I've scarcely had time to go and check game cameras...let alone go hunting. Also, my favorite and most productive stand will not be viable for several months. We are having 4 Natural Gas Wells drilled on our property and it happens to be a few hundred yards from that stand. So all the activity there has the hogs moved to other parts of the ranch or the neighbors property.

I do have other places and stands set up ....but I have just been too busy with other things. Promise I will post here when things settle down.

Again, thank you for the 'wellness' check, but I am doing fine.

Stay safe, all.

Flint.

Hope you get paid good on the wells. Gas wells correctly operated are not too big of a pain, if there are regular checks in the mailbox.

Everyone always says that. NO, I do. I wouldn't tire of having year round hunting of large ungulates which are tasty to eat - I have no crops or anything of the sort. I promise, I would do nothing but enjoy their presence.
Sorry to say this but your the type of gun owner that gives hunters a bad name. Your really ready to destroy an ecosystem, your neighbors land plus your own... just so you have a pig to hunt. Sad, I feel like I dont want to be a member here anymore..

Would not fret much, he hasn't been on here since 2010???

So, maybe he didn’t want to be a member here anymore?

We can’t get bent out of shape about the little things, I bet there are many members here that don’t hunt at all, never have and never will, doesn’t mean they are not good people. It’s just our job to take up their slack. ;) No tolerance for views that are not our own, I leave that to liberals.

Way....behind on checking cameras and such. Pulled some cards this morning and after reviewing them..got a couple of chuckles.

In the first video notice how many hogs are 'rubbing' on something. Maybe I don't need a feeder at all and can just put in rubbing posts?

In the second video I'm not sure if the Coon is hard of hearing or the Hog has Ninja skills. Generally, I like to have Coons around before the hogs show up...because they make good Sentry's. They will hear/spot something coming before you do. But not this guy.

OK....so the same Boar Hog in the video above (sneaking up on the raccoon) has been coming in just after dark at a stand 300 yds. behind my house. Impossible for me to come up with a good excuse not to go and sit for him. So this evening, after being pretty much worthless all day, I decided to grab the shotgun and sit on the 20 yd stand in hopes this young boar would show up.

I got on stand a full hour before dark and was surprised to find that the mosquitoes were not really all that bad. Heck...I could sit 2 or 3 hours under these conditions. A little before dark the 'hog lights' came on (photocell) BUT...something had knocked them off of their aim. The pattern was shining fully 10' to the right and about the same distance in front of the bait pile!

Too late for me to get down, search for a long stick and try to adjust them. I have a light mounted on the shotgun...but this hog would never stay put if I lit him up at this distance.

As it grew darker I could tell there would be just the slightest amount of peripheral light IF the hog came from the direction I expected. Well I didn't have too wait long. The hog showed up, walked right in like he had a reservation and began eating. I could easily make out his general 'form' but it was hard to tell which end was which (head or tail). I was pretty sure his head was to the right because the crunching of the corn seemed to be coming from that end.

I have a tritium front sight on the shotgun and had already trained it on the middle of the pig...when for no apparent reason he walked a few steps closer to the light. Now...I can see him plenty good. I didn't figure he would continue to be such a 'good sport' for long so I shifted my aim to a spot high on the shoulder and slapped the trigger. All I can tell you is I don't ever want to be shot with a 3" Magnum load of 00 buck!

Generally you won't have any exits with 00 buck on medium sized or larger pigs, but when I turned this one over to check, I found that 3 of the pellets had indeed gone all the way through. The 'on side' (side I shot on) was just peppered of course. Looked like all 15 pellets hit him, despite having an open choke. So...one less pig to root up my pastures. Not many mosquito bites and I didn't have to wait very long. All in all it was productive.

Photos below.

Everyone please stay safe as we wait for life to return to normal.

Flint.

As an example, I have never hunted but came here to begin to learn and have found this thread fascinating.

Seems that a semi-auto M-14 would be just the ticket for those things. Fast-shooting, powerful, and quick to reload. I don't know what the allowable magazine capacity is for pig hunting, but it should be at least 10 rounds, I would think. If that didn't work, a lever gun with a long barrel and high capacity would be pretty good.

I doubt there is a mag limit, feral hogs aren't a game animal.
