NRA Mid-range Match 7-27-14

Hello everyone. I was looking into going to my first match.....ever.
It's an Iron sight, F class and FTR class match.

I'm here to ask what exactly they mean by iron sight. Am I allowed to use any iron sighted rifle that i deem suitable for the job? I looked into the NRA HP match handbook and it doesn't specify, it only covers match rifles, service rifles, F class and FTR.

I'd like to use my Finn M39 for the match but don't want to show up to be turned away. any help would be great. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow.

Your M39 will be legal to use. Maybe not competitive, but legal. I see there are cash prizes so they'll be glad to take your money

I'd imagine you'll have trouble adjusting between ranges with the military sights and only 2 sighters at 500 and 600. But what the hey, go and have fun. Hopefully, you have a spotting scope, a shooting mat or piece of rug to lay on, ear and eye protection, and some way to suck up some of the recoil (shooting jacket or a Pachmire strap on shoulder recoil pad).

Everyplace that I've ever shot has been accommodating and helpful to new shooters.

The M39 is much more adjustable in regards to sights than regular mosins. I understand it isn't an ideal rifle to use, but i'm in it for the experience. as for the 20 rounds in 2 minutes, it's either a typo or I'm going to need the use of my stripper clips. I don't really understand why the other 2 would have 20+ minutes then at the furthest range, only 2. But if that's the case, my adrenaline will be pumping.

I'm borrowing a spotting scope and the aid of my FIL to be my spotter. I don't have a mat, but I'll get something to use. My only edge will be the use of my handloads, not so much competitive, but more accurate for my own sake.

that's a typo in the match bulletin. Record fire at 600 yards is 20 rounds in 20 minutes, plus sighting shots. 2 minutes is approaching rattle-battle speed!

You may want to check with the match director prior to showing up. The iron sight class is usually restricted to using slings for support. Bipods and rests are limited to F-TR and F-OPEN class rifles. If the match director is OK with it he may let you shoot using a mechanical rest/support, but shoot match out-of-competition.

Kudos for wanting to go to the match. As stated, competitive shooters are as friendly bunch and willing to help out new shooters. If it's your first match, be sure to let the match director know and don't be afraid to ask questions.

I don't have a sling for my M39, but I can snag it off another rifle. right now I'm a bit short on ammo, so I'm waiting to hear from someone in regards to powder, seeing how i just ran out of my goto stuff. I have other stuff as well, but it's not as good, or at least from my experience. My last alternative if i cant come up with what i need, is my AR, and I'm not too happy about that considering i only have 55 gr handloads, which will blow in the wind very easily. so if i must, i'll whip up some loads with an alternative powder.

So... did you make it out to the match? If so, how'd you do?

Unfortunately I ran out of powder and brass for my M39. And I only have 55gr bullets on hand for the AR, so I wasn't able to go.

but there is another match in a couple weeks commemorating Operation Starlight (Vietnam). It requires participants to dress the part and use any shoulder fired rifle or variant used in vietnam. it's a 100, 200, and 300 yard match. I'll use my AR for this, and i have some fatigues that will fit the part.
