I have a beautiful M1 Garand that I got a few years ago from the CMP...Springfield Armory, 1939 manufacturer (5 digit serial number), NM op rod...everything is is really in nice shape on her.
Except the stock. It was a RRAD arsenal and was at some point thrown into a bin with a lot of other Garands. LOTS of rear sight gouges in the stock, very mismatched handguards, etc. It had character...and lots of it. Hard to tell from this picture of me shooting it but it was fairly beat.
I saw in Shotgun news that Numrich was selling refinished USGI stocks. I ordered one along with handguards. It is a really nice stock. The cartouches are still there and mine has and SA cartouche as well as the circle P. Only a few dings...not really noticable.
It isn't anything like a Weinig or some of the presentation stocks I've seen but it sure looks (at least to me) like it would have when leaving the factory. I'm really proud of it. The pic shows the rear handguard being much lighter...that is a trick of the lighting...it really is pretty close.
