The NYPD's entire fleet of Highway Patrol officers was pulled from their posts and rushed to a Bronx firing range yesterday because of a malfunction discovered with their shotguns, sources said. The snafu was discovered during a training session at the Rodman's Neck range when NYPD weapon experts found "intermittent" problems with the firing pin that prevented the gun from discharging. All 75 Mossberg 590A1 shotguns had to be turned in for the older Ithaca 37s. Officers then had to be recertified to use those guns before they could return to their posts. Precinct squad cars were sent in shifts to make up for their absence, though the NYPD insisted there was no lapse in patrols.

Wonder how old the Ithaca's they're using are?

roflmao!!!

Kinda like saying "this beercan has an intermittent problem that prevents it from holding beer"....or "this hammer has an intermittent problem that prevents it from driving nails".

I'm confused. NYPD is not the NY State Troopers. Maybe they are so big they have a city Highway Patrol. Sounds like Mossberg forgot an under the table payment.

Does this sound a little ludicrous to anyone else? I mean, who was patrolling the highway while all of this went down?

If I recall my time in NYS correctly, the NY Post routinely confuses the city with the state.

But the designation of NYPD Highway Patrol is accurate even if it is only the five boroughs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_Police_Department_Highway_Patrol

I'm guessing zero effect on the 4,600 state police - in fact, were I in a speculatin' mood, I'd guess 99% of the state police haven't heard about it.

It's the units designated Highway 1 and 3.
They patrol the parkways of New York City.
They drive carsa but still wear motorcycle boots an jodspurs
Give you an idea of how they operate?

NYPD is massive, they have almost 38,000 uniformed officers, they're the largest in the nation

And yes, there is NYPD Highway patrol which is not NYSP, they patrol the highways in the city like the West Side Highway, Cross Bronx Expressway, etc.

Also realize how hypocritical of you guys this is. people are ridiculing them for turning in their shotguns when one malfunctioned. These are uniformed officers on duty in the nation's largest city. You guys don't even trust an inexpensive magazine in your gun, or look at the critical defense ammo thread, one guy had a failure to fire and a dozen people started saying they won't use the ammo, etc.

I'm not critical of NYPD, I'm critical of anyone reading this thread that might figure "all Mossbergs are crap 'cause one didn't fire".

Oh I know, you should see some of the stuff I see on here. Look at the Critical Defense thread.

I don't have a 590, but I do have a maverick 88 and an OLD 500A.

Both go BOOM! on request, every time.

Could it have been dirty firing pin channel, or a few bad rounds of ammo? No info given on if they looked at primers on the rounds that didn't go BOOM!

The only time my 590 didn't go BOOM was when I forgot to take off the safty, maybe that was NYPDs problem too.

Or it could be somebody short stroking the manual pump action and not resetting the hammer.

Or it could be a trooper trying to use the 590 like the old 37 by keeping the trigger depressed while jacking the pump action.

Mossbergs don't have any reputation as guns that mechanically fail on a regular basis so I am betting this is an issue of operator error.

Yeah. I know someone who wore out a Mossberg 500 he used for extremely harsh hunting conditions along the Colorado River, on the CA/AZ state line near Yuma. He laughed about it, since he routinely subjected it to ridiculous levels of abuse, and I think he said he had it for 20 years. He essentially TRIED to see what it would take to bring it down. Mud, fertilizer, no maintenance, tossing it in boats and trucks, dragging it through sand and soil while belly-stalking geese.

There's no reason I can imagine that cops would have undue trouble with a 590A, except perhaps one passed around and used to train every class of rookies at the academy for a decade or two.

I like the Ithaca 37, and I'm fine with them using it. But the problem they describe with the Mossberg doesn't sound credible. And it also doesn't seem possible that the department used Ithacas for many years, with absolutely no repairs necessary in a single one. Good as they are, there's no such thing as a mechanical device that never needs any maintenance.

Sounds like Mossberg forgot an under the table payment.

Sounds that way to me, too.

Heck, it seems to me some people are jumping to conclusions. It could have been an armorer that was cleaning the guns not doing something right. I am a Remington 870 person myself but I have no reason to bash Mossbergs. They tend to work pretty well.

"Mossebergs in a police departmment? thats like toilet paper handcuffs. "

before you bash a firearm, at least know how to spell it. seriously.

my mossberg 500s have quite simply easily outclassed my 870 expresses in every way except feel of the action. the wingmaster and 870p's are fine guns, but in no way are they superior to a 590a1. equal. i have owned multiples of each and fired tons of rounds through my guns. the ithaca 37 is a fine gun, but destined not to last forever. the 14" 590a1's the NYPD had were IDEAL shotguns in every way. they did themselves a disservice in my opinion and probably wasted a lot of money doing it. the skeptic knows that this is some politics.

^^^

870s take impact abuse better thanks to their steel reciever and seem less subject to small parts breakage as well. But anyways I'd be upset and probably have trouble adjusting if I had to trade in a smooth old Ithaca 37 for any recently manufactured pump gun.

it's not like the mayor of NY is fond of guns or something and would use any excuse for gun bashing or anything. After all the mayor loves gun stores

Yea and now he's running for a 3rd term. It's amazing someone can change the laws and no one seems to care....

I tried the cop thing in the early 70s. Was on an alarm drop call and I pulled the shotgun out of the rack in the cruiser I was riding in. When I tipped it down, I found the barrel was full of cigarette butts. I guess "someone" was using it for an ashtray when they were on patrol. I don't know if it would have fired in that condition, but I learned that some of the guys didn't have much regard for their equipment. It would be interesting to get the whole story.
