Let's see... Assuming you are as well trained and accurate under stress as your average NYC policeman, who hits his intended target only about 20% of the time, and assuming you are carrying in compliance with NYS's 7-round limit, then you're OK... provided you only get attacked by 1.4 bad guys, and none of them require more than one round to change their minds!

Just thinking...

NYS 7-round limit means that...

...there is no right to keep and bear arms in New York.

Forgive me, I don't know much about NYS gun laws, but is this 7-round limit per person, or per magazine? In other words, can you carry spare ammo? Not that it makes anything really that much different, but I'm curious.

This thread is about NYS (New York State). NYC has even more restrictions.
My bad. Must have been Yoda's OP comment about the marksmanship of NYC police officers that threw me off:eek:

I occasionally find it necessary to spend some time in NYS for work but I don't plan to carry there, because I'm sure that there is no chance for reciprocity. Strange how the places where you might most need to carry, it is prohibited. (can you say Chicago??)

It's 7 rounds in the mag if you are carrying.

10 rounds in the mag if you are at a range.

It's a stupid law that makes NY the laughing stock of the country. The law applies to both NYC and NYS.

NYC laws are stricter now, only in the sense that you cannot get a permit to carry in NYC. Most licenses are restricted to premises or business carry only. You CAN get a permit to carry in NYS. It's just that they are becoming more frequently restricted to target and hunting only.

Actually I'm pleased to say that I am making sure NY doesn't get any more money from me than I can help. In previous years I attended a large hobby show in NYC every January. Between hotels, meals, taxis and purchases at the show I usually spent $12-15,000.

I'm not going next January.

You're not actually trying to apply any logical thought to this question, are you?

It is an absurd law with an absurd number picked only because so many single stack 1911s meet the limit.

When this was first being seen I decided I would never go to New York...state or city. I will not be giving them any money. I even look at location when shopping on-line.

But they have gone out of their way on several occasions to remove magazines and count bullets of citizen gun owners

I know of only two times this has happened. I'm not sure of the outcome in Lockport, but the first time it happened the charges were dropped.

According to the NY State Police guide on the SAFE Act, a LEO needs probably cause of criminal activity to inspect your magazine. A traffic stop is not criminal, just a violation. So without suspicion of a crime, they can't count the rounds in your mag. IOW, it will be an add-on charge only.

I grew up in New York state and will never go back for any reason. I am not going to go back to a state where I am a felon merely for crossing the border.

Are the N frames exempt?

I have once been to the Rochester area for employer training, but refuse to go to NYC or return to NYS. My wife fully understands that if she wants to visit NYS for any reason (BIL is New Yorker) she travels without me.

AFAIK, 8-round revolvers are exempt since they don't have a replaceable magazine.
You can't shoot USPSA Open in NY anymore.
Yes, you can load 7+1.
Rumor has it Emporor Cuomo originally wanted a 3-round limit

I've already told my wife to start thinking about which state she'd like to retire in as long as it's gun-friendly. 5-1/2 years to go and counting.

Fella's;

I can't help but wonder if the citizens of New York State had strictly enforced the second, with prejudice, on the eve of the vote for the Sullivan Law, that any of the ensuing second limiting laws would ever have been proposed.

We moved back to our old jobs in Maryland from Texas but couldn't stomach the thought of living in Maryland again so we chose Pennsylvania....it may be a 75 mile one-way commute but well worth it in our opinion plus we were fortunate to purchase a sizable piece of land that allows us the luxury of our own target range.

Another plus for Pa - we applied for our LTCF (License to Carry Firearms) on a Tuesday via e-mail and received a phone call Thursday to come in, have our pictures taken, and we walked out with our licenses.....kudos to Pa!

The only thing a 7 round limit is going to accomplish is making the size of the rounds in the magazine larger. If I am limited to carrying only 7 rounds, I am going to make sure they are the biggest baddest I can get. Either a .45 ACP or a .50 GI conversion on a Glock frame.
