Obama calls on cabinet for Gun Control

Well, I'm looking long term.

1) The House would have to accept the bill.
2) The Supreme Court is currently on our side, they would have to rule it constitutional.
3) If somehow this bill gets passed, 90%+ of those who voted for it would not be in office next election.

1. Entirely possible if enough moderates flip.
2. By the time any lawsuits make it up to the Supreme Court, assuming they accept it (they didn't last time), Obama will have had the opportunity to replace one or two of those justices.
3. What good will that do? They aren't likely to include a Sunset date this time; once gone, it's gone for GOOD man.

Of course. What else is he going to say? Calling on the cabinet to brainstorm some ideas is a long way from even seeing anything introduced in Congress.

Two possible outcomes:
1) They work hard, place a lot of focus on this, get something introduced, push it through committee, get it out for a vote, etc.
2) They "work on" this and solemnly let the public know that the President is "doing all he can." Meanwhile months pass, the furor dies down, things trickle out, get debated, get stalled in committee, and nothing much REAL ever comes of it.

Either outcome could be the real goal of the Executive, too. In politics, giving the impression of "doing something" is often both more beneficial and quite a bit safer than ACTUALLY accomplishing what you say you want to do.

Yeah, funny how in politics all you have to do is "appear to do something" and you're doing your job.

In the rest of society, if you do that, you get fired. :)

Trent, that depends on how good you are at appearing to do something.

"Don't stare out the window in the morning, because you'll have nothing to do in the afternoon." I believe the character Winston on Red Green attributed that logic to his father.

I feel that the left will do whatever it takes to get their agenda pushed through. They are some of the most unreasonable bunch. Remember how dead set they were against voters showing i.d. during the election? Obama didn't win a single state with voter i.d. laws. Well the results of that crooked election are only starting to show. We knew an assault weapons ban was coming from Obama's administration. They just saw this tragedy as the opportune time to garner support for it.

All of this is a win-win for Obama and the Dems. The Republicans will block any legislation in the House (we hope) and they'll get blamed by the Dems as uncaring Neadenderathals. Their accomplices in the mainstream media will promote this image in an attempt to sway widespread public opinion agains LEGAL gun ownership. Meanwhile the prosecution of gun violence is down 40% since Obama took office. The world is truly upside down. :(

never is a very definate statement, remember i didnt think Obama would get elected for one term let alone two terms.
BTW we had a chili contest here at work the other day and the winner served rotten meat(and i mean rancid) and he won. this day and age? anythings posible.

1. The House will never accept the Bill.

That makes 2 and 3 meaningless.
WV Senator Joe Manchin (dem), which had an "A" rating by the NRA has flipped. He has been criticizing high capacity magazines and semi-auto rifles.

Glad I never voted for him. Voted for a NRA endorsed republican.

Sam IMO you broke the time honored code; let's hope this is the case this time.

Sam for president!! I want a cabinet job of my choosing! Hey it could work especially after observing 'some' in cabinet positions now!!

Crisis exploitation.
The people calling for restrictions would have called for them 1 or 2 weeks ago if they had an audience. They know that timing is critical for them because they rely on emotion rather than rational debate. In a few short weeks we will have the fiscal cliff, holiday credit card bills, etc in the headlines and people will have almost forgotten the recent tragedy.

A law will unlikely pass through the House. I believe Boehner can even keep a bill from going to a floor vote.

3) If somehow this bill gets passed, 90%+ of those who voted for it would not be in office next election.

Sure they will, they were after 94. If BO gets the House in 2016, watch ALL of your rights go away, and not just the 2nd

I actually don't this this is very likely. There are two reasons I say this
1) a lot of these guys truly believe guns are the problem. It's not posturing or vote shopping, it's a honest to God belief.
2) Obama has 4 years left to govern. If another school shooting happens (God Forbid!) the political price he and the Democrats would pay for doing nothing would be Huge.

I think they push AWB hard. And if the GOP blocks, then hey, at least they have their scapegoat.

Here is the thing, who says the furor will die down. Hopefully it will, but what happens if the media furor pushes a few more crazies to walk into a few more schools?

John, I don't think the media drives these people to commit these crimes. It might be part of the thrill but I think they really just want to kill.

You are right, though. It wasn't a mall or theatre shooting that's driving this frenzy, it was a school shooting.

I would prefer he work on this whole financial cliff problem. What good are 30 round magazines if no one can afford them!

Media do whatever their patrons want them to do.

If we all stop watching/viewing/reading/buying what they're pushing, they'll move on to something else. But the public can't get enough of this sort of thing, so it's our fault that media keep supplying it.

all are saying that it will take a long time to get an awb through congress. Obama does not need congress he will just make another persidential dictate.:fire:

Can't override the constitution with an EO. Don't work like that. He tries any backdoor moves and he will answer to SCOTUS and us.
Perfect grounds for an impeachment trial, don't ya think?

They aren't likely to include a Sunset date this time; once gone, it's gone for GOOD man.

No law is forever if the people don't want it. Yes its easier to repeal if it has a sunset provision (because inaction is easier than action) but any AWB passed now could be repealed in a future session of congress and signed by a future president.
