Washington (AFP) - US President Barack Obama declared "enough is enough" and made an impassioned call for tighter controls on military-style weapons Saturday, a day after a gunman killed three people at a family planning center.

The alleged shooter, Robert Lewis Dear, 57, entered a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs on Friday in a six-hour siege that left a policeman among the dead and nine others wounded.

Dear eventually surrendered and is in police custody, after just the latest deadly rampage to convulse the United States, although officials remain tight-lipped as to the gunman's motives

Obama said the suspect was armed with an assault weapon and had held hostages at the Planned Parenthood center, from which he opened fire at people outside.

"This is not normal. We can't let it become normal," a clearly frustrated Obama said in a statement.

"If we truly care about this -- if we’re going to offer up our thoughts and prayers again, for God knows how many times, with a truly clean conscience -- then we have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them.

"Enough is enough."

It can't come soon enough. The damage he's done will take generations to repair.

Fortunately, the make up of Congress should prevent him from doing much more damage to the Second Amendment and rest of the Constitution. I fervently hope!

Our Govenenor is a fairly liberal Democrat and the Democrats own our state legislature. We'll see in the coming month's if there are any new proposals.

In 2013, they were able to get the hi-cap magazine ban passed, as well as universal background check's, but we gave them one heck of a fight in the process.

He's not up for re-election, he might be brave enough to cram through an assault weapons ban, which our Democrat legislature would likely pass.

If something like that happens, I would just hope it results in a GOP sweep of our legislature for the next term.

But regardless, yes, it would be important to ban assault weapons in CO to make sure that someone from NC bent on murder wouldn't bring one into the state and use it. (That was sarcasm, Governor Hickenlooper, in case you didn't get it ...)

Carter did the same thing for decades. If anything he was more of an activist when he got out of office than when he was in.

Clinton was all about Bill. It was good to see that <removed> out of office. Not a single day went by without that jerk mugging the news camera.

DUI death's are in the 10's of thousands every year, mass shootings....you're luck to get to 100 death's. What are they complaining about?
