So anyways, a younger coworker of mine bought one the later FEG Hi Powers that are based more on a S&W action rather than being a clone. He's wondering if there is any other magazine that will cross reference with it. On the upside, he also purchased a complete parts kit for a regular FEG clone. I maybe getting that on the cheap. Hi Hi Power mags won't work and the safety is on the slide before anyone asks. Thanks for reading and any responses.

ProMag still has mags for that pistol listed as in stock. About 35 bucks each. Your friend can also check GunBroker and ebay for original mags.

Years ago I read somewhere that S&W magazines for their Model 59/5900 might work in the P9R but had to have a slot cut out on the other side of the magazine for the magazine catch. Did some digging around and found that Mec-Gar has the slot on both sides of the magazine and come in 15 and 17 round versions.

Might be worth a try just to get some more rounds than the 10 round magazines which are out there.

I found some factory FEG magazines on ebay and also at Hoosier Gun Works showing two 15 rounders for $55 each and two 10 rounders for $35 a piece.

P9r is a modified Hi-power magazine. Basically a longer tube with a slightly lower magazine latch hole. Something like a Beretta or Sig Tube wont worked because they are too wide in the shoulder. S&W 5900series is possible but wont lock the slide back usually on the last round due to the follower ledge being lower. Hi Power style magazines also have a different feed angle from most other magazines. Its not the hardest pistol to convert magazines for but there is more to it than just cutting a new slot for the magazine catch. If your friend has never done magazine conversions I would suggest to just stick to factory 14rd OEM magazines even though they are a little expensive. I used 20 Round Promag XD magazines through mine without a hitch but there is some work involved getting everything to fit and function just right. The feed angle is slightly high when finished but not so much that it causes problems during the feed when the case interfaces with the extractor. There is a slight amount of work that needs to be done on the feedlips to raise the magazine high enough for the slide to consistently strip the round from the magazine but not have the underside of slide come into contact with the feed lips. Followers also must be modified. As I said its a tricky pistol to convert magazines for.

P9R is a very solid pistol if you can deal with the gravel trigger and somewhat clumsy ergos. VERY heavy all steel pistols. Most newbies these days have a panic attack followed by PTSD after picking one up. Very overbuilt for a 9mm IMO but I tend to like that.

BTW Tell your friend not to dry fire it without a snap cap.

I had a P9R years ago. Tried to mod some S&W 59 mags, but they never worked right. Come to think of it, the gun never ran right with the one factory mag I had either.

Mine was hot garbage, dumped it with full disclosure and no regrets.

My buddys' FEG true Hi-Power clone is damn nice though. It looks and shoots just as well as my T-Series FN- maybe better since it has a little flare at the base of the grip.
