As feared Democrats who ran as pro gun in Ohio are showing a different face now that the races are over. My pal Ken Hanson nails them for their betrayal. Tim

Democrats shedding pro-gun mantle already?

By Ken Hanson

The vote totals from November are not even official in all races yet and a few Ohio Democrats are already giving gun owners reason to question their commitment to firearm rights.

This past November, Democrats took control of statewide offices due, in part, to finally running pro-gun candidates. In fact, the two statewide races considered upsets, Attorney General and State Auditor, were races in which a pro-gun/anti-gun choice was presented, and the underdog pro-gun candidate won. Unfortunately, the veto override vote on H.B. 347 has begun to raise the question of whether Ohio's Democrats were only pulling a Taft - talking a pro-gun game but not being there when the votes were needed.

Heading the Democratic party in Ohio and at the top of the list of disappointments is Chris Redfern. Chris Redfern voted for H.B. 347 when originally considered by the House and when considered by the House on concurrence (where there were comfortable majorities to hide within). However, when it came down to overriding the veto of the opposing party's Governor, his vote vanished.

Next on the list is NRA A+ rated Democrat John Boccieri, who is moving to the Senate next session. Similar to Redfern, Boccieri voted for H.B. 347 when originally considered by the House and when considered by the House on concurrence. Yet he abandoned gun owners and your gun rights when it came time to override the veto of the opposing party's Governor. What possible explanation can be acceptable to gun owners and gun advocacy groups for voting for a bill twice, when he was one of many, yet changing his vote when the votes needed to be counted a little closer? Beyond the immediate cost and damage to these two Representatives, their actions today damage the façade of Ohio's supposedly pro-gun new Democrats.

Further joining the list of infamy on the day of infamy was Minority Whip Steve Driehaus, who also had voted for it twice before he voted against override. Democrat Clayton Luckie voted for concurrence before voting against override, and Democrat Robert Otterman pulled a "Full Kerry" by voting against original consideration, for concurrence, and against override.

Gun groups and gun owners will be watching very closely the Senate override votes of Senator (Attorney General-elect) Marc Dann, Senator Robert Hagan, Senator Teresa Fedor and Senator Charlie Wilson. Governor-elect Strickland brought into office with him a hope for a new, reformed pro-gun Democratic party in Ohio, yet the first contested vote opportunity showed that at least some Democrats were all talk.

Gun owners have demonstrated their importance and effectiveness on the campaign trail, and have learned that the only way to be taken seriously is to make sure pro-gun candidates run on both sides of the aisle in every race.

Which brings us to Senator Goodman and Senator Stivers, Republicans who each accepted NRA and other gun group backing this past fall and then left gun owners at the altar with votes against H.B. 347. Don't come back until you've redeemed yourselves. In the meantime, we'll be recruiting and screening pro-gun candidates who will keep their word and vote the way they said they would while on the campaign trail.

Ken Hanson is the Buckeye Firearms Association Legislative Chair.

Again, I say it's time to put pressure on Dem. Marc Dann to return from AG training and vote pro-gun on this override vote. He has now entered statewide Ohio politics and needs (more than other sate senators) to "walk the walk."

Actually I am not. I have little use or trust for liberals. I have huge concerns about incoming Governor Strickland. Not so much that he will turn on us but that there is already talk that Dems are eyeing him as a possible Vice Presidential candidate to help carry Ohio in to the Democrat column in the Presidential elections in '08.
If that happens we will be stuck with the very anti gun Lee Fisher as Governor....folks really should have voted for Blackwell. But we have to live with what we have.

Not to mention, Stridkland's running mate and now Lt. Governor, Fisher, is one of the most avid anti-gunners out there.

Better yet call Marc Dann on Monday. ;)

Then call your State Senator.

Did any of you Ohioans vote for these Democrats because you felt they were pro-gun? The article seems to make the assertion that they were voted into office because of their pro gun stance. I find it hard to believe that any serious RKBA voter would vote Democrat. Then again it looks like you get the shaft if you vote republican as well.

Which brings us to Senator Goodman and Senator Stivers, Republicans who each accepted NRA and other gun group backing this past fall and then left gun owners at the altar with votes against H.B. 347.

Ohio is seriously messed up - hope you can straighten it out in time.

Marc Dann (D) has been favorable for gun rights....his opponent, Betty Montgomery (R) has been a historical PIA for gun owners. Yes, I voted for Dann.

Never underestimate the stupidity of American people to believe the Democrats are Pro-2A.

Sure, there's a Zell Miller here and there, but when the whole party practically runs on it....something stinks!

I'm reserving the majority of my comments till next year and the legislative session. I will be prepared to quote and cite the actual votes of these so-called "pro-gun" Democrats....but I'm sure others will beat me to it :scrutiny:

Just wait.

There will be some THR posters coming to this thread shortly to argue that Dems actually do support RKBA, or at least aren't nearly as bad as folks make them out to be.

Not all Dems are gun banners, they'll write.

Eeeevil Repubs are actually the ones behind the gun bans....them and the NRA of course.

Yep, the NRA is actually a gun banning organization. The NRA "needs" gun bans to happen so they can keep their position of power and have a reason to ask us all for money, they'll say.

Dems are pro gun.

Just ignore their verifiable record of votes and legislation for the last 30 years.

Just wait.
Won't have to wait long.

You could vote for Dems who at least look you in the eye and tell you they want to take your rights away, or vote for a Repub who'll act like your best friend then stab you in the back. Et tu, Brute?

Or you can finally open your eyes to the shell games and vote 3rd party.

Yes lets all vote 3rd part because it oviously works.

Hey, Don't blame me! I didn't throw my vote away!

What Henry Bowman and gopguy said are correct. The spotlight is squarely on our Ohio state Senators now. Lets keep the pressure on them until this veto is over ridden. I have been following this closely. Our senators are being overwhelmed with emails and phone calls, almost all of which have been in favor of over riding Governor Shaft's veto. Send emails, call them, keep overwhelming them on Monday and Tuesday. We can win this thing I believe. Put particular pressure on Marc Dann and let his assistants know that you will consider a no show on this vote the same way you would a No vote. He ran as a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment against Betty Montgomery, who is no friend of gun owners. We were the deciding factor in his election victory. He owes us. Remind him of that. Right now his office claims that he is undecided, but swaying toward a yes vote on the veto over ride. Lets hold his feet to the fire. Let him know that you will never support him again for any office if he doesn't stand up for us now. Call and email senators that do not represent you and let them know that although they do not represent you directly, their vote will affect everyone who lives in Ohio and all those who travel through Ohio, or visit Ohio while carrying. Best of all, let's send Governor Shaft out the door with our boot mark on the seat of his pants. I've never been a political activist, but I think we are making a difference with our emails and phone calls on this one, and it's really important to get preemption passed and get rid of that stupid plain sight rule during car carry. Let's not have to hope that Governor elect Strickland will keep his campaign promises. He could end up being another Bob Taft and shaft us and we all know Lee Fisher, his running mate, is no friend of ours.
