To recap, I'm in Cleveland for grad school. No more southern Illinois turkey for me. Two seasons into my turkey career, I was just getting the hang of Pyramid State Park, too.
So anyway, I've got a couple old magazine articles to go by, but I figured I'd ask if anyone has a preferred area to hunt turkey within a couple hours of Cleveland? If there is such a place?
I'm a recent member of the South Cuyahoga Sportsmen's Association, but I don't know enough about their property yet to know if turkey are a good hunt there.
I've been out to Grand River a handful of times to use the range as well, seems like that might support turkey, but I would guess the hunting pressure in their gets pretty stiff.
So, hoping I can still draw an early season tag, would anyone be able to point me in the right direction for where to try to bag a bird? I can't find birds for the life of me in really dense woods either - I got lucky in the woods last-minute last year, but most of the birds that I've gotten close enough to talk to have been in fields or close to 'em.
Also, just out of curiosity, is there a way to hunt turkey cheaper than the annual hunting license for nonresidents? I sure do get the shaft - living in Cleveland, landowner in Wisconsin, and I'm paying nonresident hunting fees in both. Oh well.
