So I've owned numerous pump guns over the years, but decided to dip my toes in the auto waters with a Stoeger m3000 freedom series. I know normal maintenance on my pumps is lube the rails and bolt followed by wiping the bolt off with a clean rag. On a semi auto how much and what type of lube do you use on the bolt. Also should all visible oil off the bolt per usual or leave some?

I looked up cleaning and lube for this shotgun, but there's nothing specific as to bolt lubrication.

I shoot Gas auto shotguns all the time. I have settled in to a product Called Strike Hold. Great Bore and internals cleaner and lubricant. Absolutely Disolves Carbom Buldup in the bore and Gas system. Clean bore Normally and clean gas system then complety DRY it out. Do NOT ever have any wet lube of any kind in a shotgun gas system. It Can Break slides and other parts, Spray down internals and slides let soak for about 10 minuts and wipe dry. Strike Hold impregnates and bonds to the metal. No Need for any other lubicants. Your gun will stay cleaner between cleanings also. Great rust preventative too. Use it in all my auto pitoles as well and sometimes shoot 500 rounds or more between cleanings. Cuts my cleaning time in half. Only problem I have is what do I do with all these other cleaners and lubes I own. You can find it on line or at some gun show.

On my gas guns (which have a rotating bolt), I apply a drop of 5w-30 full synthetic and work the rotating bolt a few times to spread it internally. I lightly oil the rails (this is a Beretta A400) where the steel guide rods slide into the aluminum receiver shell. The gas system gets the crud rubbed/scraped off as much as possible but does NOT get any oil or lube.

As in ALL Automatics Less is more. To much oil attracts fowling and moisture. Any oil in gas systems can be catastrophic to the internals and slides. I broke the slide in a Ithaca 51 back n my younger days by putting a light coat of oil in the gas system. Same thing happened to a Remington 30-06 model 742 that a friend borrowed and cleaned and lubed wrong. Blew gun Scrubber all over his face when he fired it. Kept on shooting it and broke the slides. This is why I warn People about Over lubing Autos.
