CBS2 Exclusive: Feds Seize Rocket Launcher In N.J.
BREAKING NEWS: Weapon Found On Jersey City Lawn, In Flight Path Of Newark Airport

Scott Weinberger
Reporting

(CBS) JERSEY CITY A Jersey City woman made a shocking discovery on her lawn this morning when she noticed a military rocket launcher lying in the grass.

Niranjana Besai was leaving her house, located at 88 Nelson Street, to go to work just after 8 this morning when she spotted the launcher on her front lawn. "I read it and it [said] 'missile,'" Besai told CBS 2 HD. "There was little 'missile' [writing] on it."

She immediately called police.

Sources tell CBS 2 HD that the device is the type used to shoot shoulder-fired rockets and is capable of taking down an aircraft.

What's more troubling, sources add, is that Besai's house is located along flight path for Newark Liberty International Airport.

Besai's neighbor, Joe Quinn, saw her pointing at the equipment from her front porch. When he walked over to see what the fuss was about, he was just as shocked to see the six-foot-long weapon.

"She's pointing that there's something in the front," he told CBS 2 HD. "I said, 'Let me come down and take a look,' and I saw a little soldier on it and I said, 'Whoa, that's a missile launcher or something!'"

Quinn says he originally thought the launcher was just a pipe, but after noticing the picture of the soldier, he realized it looked similar to a missile launcher he'd seen on television.

Jersey City Police removed the launcher, and the incident is now being investigated by the Joint Terrorism Task Force and the FBI.

Sources say Besai is not involved in the investigation as a suspect.

Jersey City Police could not confirm whether the device was actually operable.

Point and click?

This is kinda bizarre, though. Maybe they can trace where that thing came from, since hand-held missile launchers tend to be closely tracked and all....

Troubling. Just about any shoulder fired missile can take down a passenger jet on take off. An RPG less likely but still possible.

Its gotta be some kind of a hoax. Who leaves missile launchers lying around anyway? I always stow mine before I leave the area.:)

ya know, there was that time when I had a few too many beers and went out for a stroll open carrying my LAWS tube ... but it came home with me that night and it wasn't anywhere near an airport.

:uhoh:

THANK GOD SOMEONE FOUND IT> > > BEEN LOOKING ALL OVER THIS MORNING FOR THAT DARN THING!

In all seriousness its probably an empty practice plug. Sounds rediculous though.

And if that don't beat all, I believe there is a story on Digg about a Patriot missle recovered in a junkyard in Florida. No fears, though, it's missing that part "...that goes boom" according to a local USAF official.

More MSM media hysterics. The thing was a LAW's (Light Antitank Weapon)tube... (one 'n done) The mention of the 'soldier' figure on the tube pretty much confirmed that for me. I s'pose you could shoot down an aircraft... if it was 100 yards up 'n you were really good at leading the target. These can be bought in most any surplus store. They're harmless. maybe some kid dropped it... or somebody thought they'd shake up the 'hood by leavin' it there. Most people are ignorant of weaponry of any type.

I have a inert/demilled/once shot AT4 in my collection. It sits in my living room in the corner. Anyone who sees it is like "OH GOD IS THAT A REAL BAZOOKA/ROCKET LAUNCHER!!!! OH MY GOD!?!?!!?" Calm down people. It's just a tube.

Well, of course - we can expect this sort of thing since the AWB expired ...

Did it have a pistol grip and a shoulder thingie that goes up...? ;)

(tallpine imagines the mischief that could be made with a piece of pvc sewer pipe, some blocks of wood, and spray paint :D )
