I have had a old 57 no didjit for some years and was wondering when they went to the 57-1 version. I had always thought this gun was from the late 70s or early 80s till I finily noticed that it had no number after the model number.
The dash 1 (-1) series started in 1982. The no dash model ran a long time. From the beginning in 1964 till 1981.
You can post part of your serial number and people can give you an approximate date.
Since the 57 was introduced in 1964, a 57 equals a 27-2 or a 29-2 (the -2s came out in 1962) in engineering designs. The 57-1 denotes the elimination of the pinned barrel and recessed chambers (the 27 and 29 became -3 at that point).
