I'm looking at a semi M740 in 308, but don't know much about these. Does anyone have any experience with them????????

The early model 740 & 742 rifles had a different bolt setup than the current 7400's.
The 7400 is a better setup in that it doesn't have the jamming problems the early models exhibited.
Once the early ones gall up the metal inside, they're wall hangers.
I have a 5-digit serial # 740 Woodsmaster that hasn't worked right yet.
My 7400 has never failed once...
They're both in.30-06.
I'll need to take them both out for cleaning and testing again.
I'd recommend that you get a 7400 instead.
Also recommended by someone on another board is to use whatever 150-gr. ammo works best as it won't pound the action as much as heavier bullets.
I've used Remington 180 & 220-gr. ammo exclusively with complete satisfaction in my 7400, including groups at 100-yds. in the 1-1.5" range.
That's pretty damn accurate for these rifles.

I really don't know anything about these rifles at all. This one is pretty clean from what I've seen so far & I have a good scope that should work well. There are stories about these things jamming, & it looks like cleaning/lubing prevents most of that.

Once properly cleaned of packing grease, my 7400 (a much-improved 742) has been 100% reliable.
It was shooting 1.5" groups at 100yds, now back out to 3-4" groups. Gotta find out what's wrong.

My cousin has a 740 in .30-06 inheriated from a great uncle. It has killed a lot of deer but is very nearly a single shot unless kept very clean. No 10-round mags that we have tried yet work in it. It is minute of deer accurate for east Tennessee.

The magazine in my 7400 was loose. The protrusion in the front of the magazine that holds it in place was worn, so I used a 1/16" rod and welded a little material on it and filed it to the proper size. Works like a charm now.

Had jams a couple months back with my 742 in 30-06, which it had never done before. The fired cases were getting stuck in the chamber and the ejector claw was stripping the case rim off.
After a little disassembly help from fellow THR members I thoroughly cleaned it...put 12 180gr Core-Lokts through it Tuesday with nary a jam or ejection issue. I'm a wuss when it comes to recoil though, so I'll be sighting it in and hunting with 150gr bullets this fall.

I have one that I bought at a charity auction a year ago and haven't picked it up yet. I think mine is a 742. In the mid 1950's my father used to bring these home for people from the Navy Exchanges in Japan. They were engraved and inlaid with silver. Labor was cheap there and PX prices were low. Seemes like every trip he was bringing someone else an engraved rifle.

My rifle sometimes misfeeds if I fire a couple of boxs of ammo through it fairly quick without cleaning it. Just don't let it get too hot, it's a hunting rifle so treat it like one.

Thanks. Again. This rifle is in pretty good shape, especially considering its'age. Mounted an old Leupold 3X7 from another rifle and it's not bad at all,

I have a 740 in '06 that I got used as a kid. I'm now a Grandpa and it has yet to not function properly every time I've pulled the trigger. It hasn't been deer hunting in a few years (me neither for that matter) but I'm in no hurry to part with it.

Chamber cancer
My wife inherited one from her DAD. She used it for a few years until it got chamber cancer. Chamber gets pitted, will pull the rim off cases. no cure except a new barrel. My gunsmith tells me it only happened on 30-06's.
Inspect chamber if you can, but shooting it 20 or 30 times would be better.
I tried to fix hers, polished it inside as best I could. No joy.
Bought her a new 7400 in 243.
You would need to coat the chamber with oil or grease between seasons.

It's the gun my dad uses to hunt. I know a 740 that took 27 deer in 1961. (My dad was 4 at the time, wasn't him.) It's a .308 caliber as well. It's a nice gun to shoot. Recoil is pretty manageable.
