Old School and Old World, the 6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schoenauer has been around for well over a century as both military and sporting caliber. As a hunting cartridge it has been used in every corner of the world where big game is hunted, accounting for everything from Mongolian sheep to African elephant to New England whitetail. In Hemingway's "The short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber." poor Macomber was done in by a 6.5 MS, from a rifle like the one shown here. One of the reasons the 6.5x54 MS was such a favorite of big game hunters the world over was the slick working, always reliable 1903 Mannlicher and why it is my favorite "Old School" deer rifle..

Not necessarily. I once owned a Mauser 93 (cocks on closing) in 300 Savage. (It was a POS hack job, but it was neither Krag, nor 99.)Excluding the .30-40 and .300 Savage would be un-American!
Of course the rifles would be a chopped and bobbed Krag and a Model 99 lever gun.
Naturally , there were a few other weapons chambered for these rounds: The '95 Winchester was available in .30-40, and Ruger has made a few #1 Rifles in .30-40 and .300 Savage, for example. Not necessarily. I once owned a Mauser 93 (cocks on closing) in 300 Savage. (It was a POS hack job, but it was neither Krag, nor 99.)
Here is my idea of a old school deer rifle.
Just finished putting this one together.
TC Contender carbine. Tuned action, TC barrel, wood from Bullberry and Redfield 4x scope. Cal is 30-30 WCF.
