1) .260 Remington in a 16-1/2” Ruger M77 Compact with Burris 4x32 Short Mag Scope, 120 grain Nosler Ballistic tip over Varget.

2) 6.5 Creedmoor in a Ruger GSR Scout Rifle with Leatherwood Hi-Lux 2-7x 32 EER variable Scout Scope mounted forward. 140 grain Federal Fusion ammo.

Both make meat, and are a delight to shoot.

My Wal Mart 700 in 243. Added a Boyd's laminate stock, metal trigger guard, and Bushnell banner in Leopold mounting hardware. Don't even remember how many deer I have slayed with it.

Old School and Old World, the 6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schoenauer has been around for well over a century as both military and sporting caliber. As a hunting cartridge it has been used in every corner of the world where big game is hunted, accounting for everything from Mongolian sheep to African elephant to New England whitetail. In Hemingway's "The short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber." poor Macomber was done in by a 6.5 MS, from a rifle like the one shown here. One of the reasons the 6.5x54 MS was such a favorite of big game hunters the world over was the slick working, always reliable 1903 Mannlicher and why it is my favorite "Old School" deer rifle..

Another off the chart historical, cool tool, deer rifle!

I guess that I am "old school" since here are all my deer rifles:

.30-06 (Remington 721)

.300 Savage (Savage 99)

.30-30 (Marlin 336)

(oops, just realized I also have a Ruger Scout Rifle in .308, but I doubt it will ever go deer hunting. Not will the surplus guns like a Mosin 91/59, Yugo SKS, or Enfield Mk5, even though any of them would suffice to take deer.)

Not necessarily. I once owned a Mauser 93 (cocks on closing) in 300 Savage. (It was a POS hack job, but it was neither Krag, nor 99.)
Naturally , there were a few other weapons chambered for these rounds: The '95 Winchester was available in .30-40, and Ruger has made a few #1 Rifles in .30-40 and .300 Savage, for example.

But those were my choices, as the OP asked, in those calibers. It's all good.:)

My go to deer gun is a Winchester 94 in 30-30.
Hoping to build a falling block 358 win this year... my dream dear rifle

Great looking gun, planning to do one in 30-30AI

Not a 30-30 AI but I am thinking about a 25-35, or maybe a 375JDJ .

I have had a 30-30 AI in the past, great gun but I like being able to get ammo off the shelf if I need to.

I know that you can use standard cases but not if you want good performance and to avoid resetting your sights.

For me it's my [Browning BLR] 308 Win. Because that's what I have. I think others are a more suitable response but I don't have any of them.
