I recently got an early 80's Sig P220 9mm. I didn't know they came in any other flavor than .45ACP before seeing this one. Got it at a great price but it has been a shooter and not a safe queen. My intent is to refinish it and make it exactly how I want it. Didn't come with box or paperwork so I don't think I'm committing a sin changing grips, trigger work, and cerakote to an older W German Sig.

Anyway, having a hard time finding grips for that old style with the European mag release. The original checkered grips are pretty rough with lots of small cracks around the edges. Serviceable but by no means pretty. Are there aftermarket grips available or do I need to just get a set for current models and tweak them to fit?

Here's a pic. You can see some of the grip cracks but they don't show up well in the pic. Worse in person

That is a pretty nice gun, the sharp spur hammer isn't my favorite, but I did prefer the old checkered grips as opposed to the newer stippled ones.

Besides 9mm and .45ACP, the 220 was available in .38 Super and .30 Luger. The 9x19mm version was the issue gun for the Swiss (original contract spec for the 220) and the Japanese military.

I'm pretty sure Hogue still makes grips for the 220 with the European magazine catch
