One, maybe 2 shots

One or 2 hit wonder

  • 357 snubby or sub compact 9mm, moderate chance of 2nd shot

  • 410 Derringer with buckshot, least chance of second shot

  • 380acp, weak but most likely to beable to shoot twice

  • EDC with several stabs

Let's say you are jogging in big cat country and the putty tat is going to pounce on you and you might get one or 1 shot 2 off.
Or you are jogging in ninja country and they don't want to assassinate you with a poison dart from a blow gun pond reed, because that gets old after they have done it 20 times.
The attacker makes a twig snap so it's almost a surprise attack.
So range isnt a factor, maybe 3 feet if you're lucky and is your only chance to have 2 shots.
If one or 2 shots doesn't do you you're cat poop or the latest ninja attack victim.

As ridiculous as the scenarios are, I’m going with a quick flick of my wrist to light off the bull pup cannon loaded with canister shot that I’m pulling on a wagon behind me.

But for quick and dirty scenarios where only a couple defensive shots are realistic, I want a fat and slow thumper from a revolver. 45colt, 44 special, 45acp...

My default, in rural areas, is a not-so-snubby .357 Magnum revolver. I carry a stout blade everywhere. I reckon that I would go for the revolver, first, If practicable, and since only one vote is allowed, the closest choice is the first one,

I picked the 357 but in reality when I go up walking in the Lincoln National Forest Sacramento Mountains the 44 mag on my belt is first.View media item 3119

I agree!

For over twenty years I vacationed twice a year in Southern NM. I hiked once or twice a day in the Lincoln National Forest. I carried a SW 44 mag Mountain Gun.

In those 20+ years I only came across one Black Bear and one Wolf. Fortunately, they had no interest in me. It would have made my decade to see a Big Cat.

I did see lots of Deer, Elk and Turkey BTW.

I honestly don't know. I do Not want to be one of them. I'll research it. I know that their are guided hunts for them and my son found a spot where one of them always marks its territory. Boy it stinks there!

I have lived where I can see Sierra Blanca and Mon Jeau (Baldy and Mount Joe to the old timers) if I make a 26 mile drive to the west since 1956 and have never heard of one. I have heard of one person done in by a mule deer buck years ago. I had an uncle that ranched in the Tularosa basin that knew the man and he told me the story. I used to deer hunt in them and never saw a lion and only got one quick look at a black bear.

I am old school,and OLD.

So its easy to recall when THE one shot stop record was [ and still is ] the .357 magnum with a 125 grain Federal H.P.

So my choice would be a wheel gun in .357 and a bit heavier than my S&W 360 scanduim, too much recoil

I have a Ruger security six 2 3/4 " barrel,there ya go !

If I was jogging it would be a Light weight gun . One of the many 380's I own. Nothing over 11oz for sure. Most likely the Beretta Pico. I also have the confidence of my skills with the gun to be able to shoot it very fast if needed and good point and shoot skills. It depends on the individual. The though of running a lot of miles with a heavy gun would not work for me at all. Especially day after day which I do.

"Most likely to be able to shoot twice"?

I dunno about this.

I've seen enough video of big cats hunting to believe that this whole scenario belongs in fantasy land.

They hunt by stealth and speed.

The sound of a snapping twig would not give me time to react--to turn and figure out what it was.

To think that one could get off even one shot requires one to believe that one could access the firearm.

I doubt that most people could even clear leather .

Even when they are about to attack?

I just depends. Human eyesight is actually pretty good in low light, and that can work to your advantage. My Father was coming back to the house at dusk and saw a cat moving into attack position above him on the hillside. He was able to draw the .357 Ruger Service-Six he was carrying a put a 158 gr Gold Dot into the tree the cat was peaking around, ending the encounter.

Do you sometimes walk by one that is in 100% stealth mode and never know it was there? Absolutely.

Do you sometimes stumble upon one and see it in the open with full visibility? Absolutely.

Do you sometime get a fleeting glimpse of one moving in the trees? Absolutely.

Can you get caught in the middle of a hunter/killer group of cats and hear their calls back and forth to each other? Absolutely.

Can you be attacked, fight back, and win? Absolutely.

Can you be attacked and lose? Absolutely.

I went with option 1, for the best effect. Two 357's or 9's ain't bad.

And my EDC is a Glock23.4, so stabbing with that, might be ineffective. Although my Dawson front sight can peel flesh from bone. But that's more of an haymaker swing, not a stab.

Wear a Halloween mask backwards so you have eyes on the back of your head. That and walk a dog. They will hopefully go after the dog before you.

Probably just go with my avatar commander.

My best friend and hunting partner is a 75# Dobe. Smart and ripped as she can get on the muscle scale. Can easily jump and grab a stick, well over my head,yadayada.....

That Cat pic just eeks me out!!! Knowing what my Coco is capable of,and that cat is 3 or 4 times her, plus some. If it was stationary,I "think" a 180g JHP 44 mag, full tilt might put it down but, dang.... what an animal.
