Unless I'm mistaken, Texas law states that a folder can have a blade no longer than 3.5 inches from handle end to point when open. 5 or 5.5 inches (one of those) are the legal limit for fixed blades in TX BUT, if you do wear a fixed blade, it must not be in any way concealed, covered, or in a pocket. This I have been harassed about when my jacket covered the top of the handle of a fixed blade of only 4 inches blade length.

I think that the opinel is the superior choice for urban carry. I have moved away from them lately for EDC, but whenever I travel my go to blade is the #8. It is about as threatening as grandma and legal everywhere. I also love the performance, I can get my #8's shaving sharp with little effort. I hope you do get the chance to check out the larger models.

Anybody know of a folder with an exactly 5.5" blade?

Camillus CUDA Maxx. It also has an excellent D2 blade and anodized titanium grips with a frame lock. I do love it so.

I just went through this a couple of weeks ago with some local cops and our county attorney.. seems like our county is not one that plays by the same rules as the rest of the state.. AKTI has a requested definition of what is a blade and what is not.. but our county attorney says that any part of the blade of a folding knife is incidental to the total length of the blade.. not just the sharpened area, or from the tip to the hilt. But on a fixed blade, they measure from the tip to the hilt.. so if you have a solid tang, you are safe..

Feedback on Svörd and/or Okapi pocket knives?

Reviving ArfinGreebly's post on "peasant knives" I wonder if anyone has any personal experience that they would like to share with the New Zealand Svörd knives of the same name.

I am also interested in the South African (originally German) Okapi knives which also seem like great, simple, cheap, everyday carry knives. Any first-hand comments on those would also be welcome.

Oh, and I am more interested in their utility as everyday pocket knives rather than as a weapon to defend myself against a horde of zombies.

Ya'll have got me wanting to get my Opinel #8 out and work with it some more.

Things that I noticed with mine were that it would take an excellent edge, but for whatever reason wouldn't hold it too long. Having said that my knives generally see lots of cardboard, insulation, etc.

I'm looking forward to trying some of the waterproofing tricks also, having a knife in your pocket where the wood is swollen to the point that it won't open defeats the purpose of having a knife in your pocket!

I own a few Opinels, small blades, for 18th C. reenacting. Even have a German ratchet-back for earlier centuries.
Didn't stop me from buying like five Benchmades last year...

Just got a No.8 for Christmas.

I intended to give it as a gift, but ended up ordering another one to give away. It is a brilliant knife, just brilliant.

I like the Svord Peasant a lot. It's thin, like the Opinel, and made of good steel. Mine has been used quite a bit since I received it last summer. The blade has a patina, but no hint of rust. I oil it with regular vegetable oil (food friendly). Good knife at a great price.

That's very interesting, I didn't know anyone else out there liked friction folders! I also didn't know there were any companies out there making them. Who did you order your's from?

JLaw: I got mine from edcdepot.com, but Ragweed Forge also has them. I've had good service from both dealers. No complaints at all.

I also emailed Bryan Baker, and he seems like a nice guy. He answered my questions promptly. I would buy another Peasant Knife in a second.
