Well, I'm out of Red Dot, thank god (too smokey), for loading my .45ACP.

A long time ago, I bought a tin of 700X. I'm thinking of using it for reloading the 45.

Any opinions on this powder and .45 ACP?, generally?

Thanks all.

700X is a great powder for 45ACP. The shooters in IDPA in the Flagstaff area use the hell out of it. It gives little bitty tiny groups in my son's Llama. I use 4.5 grains driving 200lawc.

Excellent. I have 500 230g RN Silver Bullets NIB ready to go. Not too pleased with the Red Dot batch. Definitely not "itty bitty" groups by a long shot. However, that was my first batch of 45s.

Looking forward to seeing better groups.

700X is a good powder. It is more expensive than powders that do just as well. Clays is a good choice, Tite Group, Red Dot and Bulls Eye are all good powders in the same general burn rate area.

I have never known Red Dot to smoke, and I have burned 10 pounds in handguns and 100 pounds in shotguns. With lead bullets I would know what the smoke was from but if you had smoke with jacketed bullets it would be a new one on me.

Could be be that the Oregon Trail Bullet Company "Silver Bullets" are smoking this much?

I really notice it with the .45, but not so bad with my Steyr M40 rounds.

I'm going to have to load some jacketed bullets and try out the Red Dot again, and compare it with 700X. I really like the "red dots" to affirm that my powder measure is dispensing powder in every load. Good feature.

Thanks for the answers.

700X powder

700X meters accurately, is economical and I used it as a commercial reloader along with WW231. For someone in the central California area I have a sealed 12 pound steel keg extra for pickup.

I have used 700X since it came out. First for shotshell, then for just about everything else, from 30-06 squirrel loads to every caliber pistol I own. It is still my primary powder for light target to moderate pistol. In .45acp, I use 3.5gr under H&G#130 or H&G#68 for target in a light springed Gold Cup and I use 4.7gr under a 230gr (Lyman #452374) for a heavy springed Commander. I regard it highly. Quantrill

I have shot a lot of 700X in 12 gauge and various non-magnum pistol calibers. It does not meter as precisely as Ball powder but is probably as close as factory loads.

If you like dots, 700X has yellow dots as markers, really ungraphited flakes of nitrocellulose/nitroglycerine.

700X.....

My favorite powder for .45 acp. I use 4.8 gr behind a 200 gr. lswc with great results. My go to combo for over 20 years.
