I have been thinning my gun collection down because I joined the Navy and don't have a good place to leave them while I go to OCS and subsequent training. I own my home and have a small safe to keep documents, etc that I inherited from my Dad but its a crappy Sentry that he bought at Wal-Mart. I have used it in the past to stick 5-6 handguns in while on vacation but I know I need something a lot better and bigger than that to store my rifles and several handguns.

I go to OCS May 31st for about 12 weeks and then I don't know where I will get stationed (hopefully not California). Florida will be my first pick but either way... I need some recommendations on a safe that I can buy for around $1000 that I can use while I'm gone and then transport relatively easily wherever I get moved. My girlfriend will be staying in my house and I have an alarm + 2 dogs (boxer, and a pitbull) but I would feel much better leaving my firearms in a dedicated gun safe while I'm gone.

What kinds of things should I be looking for? Any particular brands that are best?

I also recommend the Browning bronze series. They are heavy enough to not be easily moved when loaded down with guns and ammunition, yet easy enough to move if you have to relocate. The door also comes off if you need to take it up or down stairs.

Remember to put a de-humidifier in with the guns. Perhaps one of the plug-in units like the goldenrod. It will take the worry out of not seeing your guns for twelve weeks.

Good luck in OCS.

I had never looked at those Diamond Back safes. I see I can get the GS5940H for $1500 shipped. Pretty good deal. Are they made in China?

They are made in China, but are well built safes, and a good value for the money.

If you want to go this route, send me a PM. I can probably help you out.

They are made in China. The bad: A little door rattle. I can fit 2-3 credit cards between the door and frame. The bolts on the side of the hinges are not active. The good: Price. Thicker body than normal, which means it is heavier for similarly sized safes.

I've got a Liberty safe, Franklin model. I seem to think I paid around 1400.00. It's a good safe, has bolt hole openings at the corners to attach it to the floor. Good fire rating.

Safes are just like workshops, you get the size you think you need, only to find out you soon outgrow it. :uhoh:

I'm going to say, skip the safe, buy insurance. it will be a lot cheaper, safes can be cracked... insurance can't.

What's the price of your kids life ?

Buy what you can afford, anythings better than nothing. Most robbers are just smash and grab, they want to get in and out as quick as possible and with as little noise. Use common sense too, don't leave you safe in the garage with all your power tools near by. Mines bolted to the floor and wedged in the corner of the garage so they can't get leverage with a pry bar. If they want it that bad they will get it no matter what kind of safe you have, add some extra insurance but a safe is a must to keep the little ones out.

here is a idea, don't leave both ammo and guns where kids can get them.
