Opinions on the Feg hi power clone.

My buddy has the FEG (I forget the exact model). Outwardly, it looks very nice- the equal of some FNs. Inside, the machining was much rougher, but nothing that effected function. It shot just fine, but did have some jamming issues with the original Hungarian magazines. FN and Mecgar mags ran perfectly. The trigger pin walked out after 50 or so rounds, most likely because someone had driven it out the wrong direction and stretched out the holes. I machined the pin for a C-clip to retain it and that fixed the problem.

Overall, it was a real nice gun. Worth grabbing if the price is right.

I have one i found on gunbroker about 4 years ago. Won it for $230 and love it to death. Mine’s a true clone, not the one with the model 59 internals. It’s “finish challenged” but I couldn’t care less.

I removed the magazine disconnect and discovered a really nice trigger. Added a Mecgar mag and installed fresh springs. Hoping to find a hollow point it likes but I’m not holding my breath.

A bit rougher looking, but working copy. Stay away form the DA version.
Wow, I totally forgot I had one of the DA ones looooong time ago.........but then it was a forgettable gun, and prone to jamming. I didnt know way back then that they were really S&W M59 clones, so I never tried a S&W magazine to see if it would fix the problem.

There was also a single-stack .45 FEG which was similiar to a scaled-up M39 which was neat looking. Never knew anybody who had ever shot one, so I cant speak to their reliability, though.

A buddy of mine has the two tone version of the FEG PMK-9HP and while not as nice in the fit and finish department as a Browning Hi-Power, it's not bad for the price he paid for it. Very reliable with easy to see sights, he had to remove the mag disconnect to get the trigger pull down to a more useable weight.

Bottom line: If I came across one in decent shape and at a reasonable price I would get it.

I've had 2 over the years and both were very reliable and fun to shoot. It used to be easy to find surplus mags, but I rarely see them anymore. With surplus 13rd mags and 115gr FMJ ammo I never had problems. I remember buying them for $200 or less back in the day.
I did have the double action version at one time. I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it. The had a D/A version in 45acp. After such bad luck with the 9mm version, I never had any interest in it.

If you get the true clone FEG, they are great pistols.

There was also a question about the Tisas. I have a BR9 in stainless, and other than the frame and slide I have replaced pretty much everything else. Some were based upon preference, such as the C&S trigger and SFS, but others, like the slide stop and extractor were mandated by poor quality of the originals.

I have the FEG B9R, a great gun,,, have been offered a lot for it, but it’s not for sale right now.

Look for the true BHP clone, the early PJK-9 is a true clone, later FEGs changed to have S&W mechanism, likely for DA consideration. True clone has a oval crossbar insert, can see the seam at the right side above the trigger. I have a PJK in beautiful polished blue, shoots so well and looks so pretty, I got it used at $175 shipped many years ago, the best $175 I've spent. I also have/had FM and Arcas, FM is earlier FN licensed copy but rough, I sold it, Arcas is a good reliable utility gun, but not as pretty. FEG is the best. Here is an earlier thread with good info

I had a PJK9 in the late 90s. It cost around 170. Good gun.

I have always been leery of off brand hipower ever since i witnessed an AD from one during an IDPA match. Fellow just manipulated the safety while the gun was in the holster and it discharged. Fortunately he was not shot. The match ROs examined the gun found it would do that consistently. I am not sure if it was an FEG or not. Anyway there are better 9mm pistols out there so I will just stay from anything that is not an FN browning.

Any Hi-Power design will be unsafe if it cannot pass the "click test". That goes for FN, Browning, FEG, Tisas, FM, Arcus, Inglis, Kareen,...

I've heard the exact same thing about the PJK's and P9M's in regards to the trigger pin and the magazines. One of the models has a different barrel lug as well than the standard HP lug. I believe it's the later model, but I can't remember for sure, I think it's the PJK. I did examine a PJK magazine up close once and did notice the exterior was a bit rough and this was a new gun. But the finish on the gun looked nice. I don't remember how the spring was as it was a long time ago. IIRC the magazines were advertised as 14rd, but more likely I would say they should be loaded with 13rd like the original HP magazines with the solid follower. Though I don't have a PJK/P9M magazine spring to count the coils on, I don't think the followers are hollow like the 15rd Mec-Gar version where the spring sits up and inside the follower for more room against compression.

FM is earlier FN licensed copy but rough

Man, you aren't kidding when you say the Argentine FM is rough! My brother has one and the thing is rough, inside and out! It has some sort of black painted finish that looks like it was put on with a brush. The inside was equally as uneven with tool marks everywhere. The trigger pull was off the charts and the sights were those same tiny ones found on early Hi-Powers but the gun did work; just not that refined!
