It's French walnut and was made for a TALO distributor special in 2009/2010. Made by Altamont and recently purchased from them through Ebay.

Bad as AR's are about parting folks with dollars, I think 10/22's are worse.

I'm not a recoil junky but shooting 22 is the most soulless experience I've ever had at the range. It just does nothing for me. I recognize the utility of 22 which is why I have my CZ 452, but I get no enjoyment from shooting the round. Don't ever foresee owning a 10/22. Good chance the wife ends up with one though since she enjoys plinking with a 22.

Walk out as far as you think you can hit with a .22, then go another 100yds or so. None of mine are particularly interesting at sub 50-75yds, even on relatively small targets, but a golfball at 100, especially free to jump around, and its a whole nother game. Actually shooting moving stuff from 25-50 yds with a .22 is fun, or plates fast.
Shooting 200yds at bowling pins is fun, so are gongs. Farther becomes more challenging, but even more rewarding as long as you can see/hear a hit.
I havent been able to get to the longer range places i shoot very often lately, so plinking small pieces of clays off the 100yd berm is the best practice i get.
Now its mostly pistols and .22s, tho i did get new tires for my truck so ill be able to go back up to where i can shoot farther.

Got the email that my upper is shipping. Cool! Got all my other goodies to put the lower together. Didn't realize the Magpul UBR comes with a buffer tube, so I'll have another extra. Tomorrow is a rain day so maybe I'll get my lower ready then. May go ahead and order a couple more lowers, ya know, for future posterity.

Who makes a good barrel?

IMHO the sweet spot for quality vs. cost trade off is with ER Shaw barrels.

That would be my first choice if they have what you want.
