Oregon man shot by dog recovers
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

PORTLAND -- A man from the Tillamook-area who was accidentally shot over the weekend when his dog jumped into a boat and set off his gun is recovering.

Matthew Marcum was shot with his 12-gauge shotgun Saturday on the Tillamook Bay. His legs and buttocks were injured in the incident and he was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center in Portland.

His father, Henry Marcum, says the 23-year-old Marcum was about to tie up an 11-foot open aluminum boat, when his 3-year-old Labrador, Drake, jumped into the boat.

Matthew Marcum says his dog, Drake, is a good dog and he isn't upset with him.

Questions for those with more shotgun experience than I (with zero experience):

How does a man get shot in the ass by his dog? Can a shotgun really be discharged by jumping on it?

With a boat like that, the shotgun would most likely be leaned against a seat and angled up slightly. Chances are the dog just jumped into the boat and his paw landed on the trigger. Freak thing.

My guess would be the dog's foot went inside the trigger guard. There also could have been an object inside the trigger guard which pressed the trigger when the dog moved the boat.

Either way, it means the shotgun was already pointed at Mr. Marcum's backside.

Putting a loaded gun into a boat and out of his control. That's how...

He should have put an empty gun in the boat and loaded it when he was ready to hunt and not until...

Safety?

I would bet the hunter had his safety off on the gun. It is highly unlikely that the dog could have pushed the safety off and pulled the trigger.
It was all over the news here in Oregon today. I guess he was shot in the hips and butt. That's one time a guy would prefer steel shot over lead.
Use your safety.

At the very least, the gun should not have had a shell chambered until it was in his control. Lucky he got it in the backside.

I think a dogs paw can fit inside a trigger gaurd. Of course, I'm not going to try and find out, don't want to end up like this guy. :uhoh:

My guess would be that the guy was out duck or goose hunting, so the shotgun had a chambered round in it, waiting for the next duck to fly over. Yes, he should have had the safety on, since it sounds like the gun was not in his hands. Dog jumped in, paw went inside trigger guard, gun went off, ass got hit. Stuff happens!

That dog should be prosecuted for assault. Why not? People don't kill people guns do. Or is that dogs, I mean guns or is it the other way around?

Ditto.

I've heard of several instances of "dog shoots man".

Last year there was a guy in Iowa who was shot by his dog when he set down his gun to climb over a fence. Apparently the dog somehow managed to pull the trigger with its paw. I'm guessing that the dog was excited and jumping against the fence.

Does anyone know the dog's political affiliations? Has he posted on THR?

Is it possible this was self-defense?

If the dog were on trial, I imagine his lawyer would articulate that all sorts of terrible things happen to dogs and dogs can't tell anyone. Defense through force or a retreat are their only recourse...this dog simply had access to a force multiplier.

That, or the guy may have been a bleeding-heart liberal and picked the dog up at the pound and trusted it around his gun. Mistake #1.

the best dog shoots man i read of was some hero went to club his wifes 20 pound dog . hit it with butt of rifle. bang! right between the eyes.

My old Mossberg does not have a drop saftey so all you need to do is chamber a round switch off the saftey and drop it. It will go off. I believe the 870 Remmington is the same way. Just remember that before you start carrying that Serbu super shorty stuffed in your pants.
