Osprey 45 on Backorder

In September I ordered an Osprey 45 from the Silencer Shop. They told me they were back ordered, with 300 in front of me, so it would be a few months. I’m really set on the offset design of that particular suppressor so waiting wasn’t a big deal, but it’s still on back order after seven months.

I talked to Silencerco, the manufacturer, after Christmas. They said they are making and shipping the Osprey 45 regularly, but wouldn’t tell me how many were being produced.

Silencer Shop has been unwilling to tell me where I am at in the back order que, so I don’t know if they are only getting 10 a month and I’ll have to wait another 24 months, or I’m next in line when they get another shipment.

I’m not aware of any else making an offset suppressor, so I expect I’ll keep waiting and this note is more or less venting, but it would be nice to know where I am at. The Silencer Shop is probably reluctant to make promises or predictions but they should be able to tell me how many more back orders are in front of me. Grump-grump.

And of course once it's in the dealer's hands, I'll be waiting for the tax stamp.

As someone who was drawn in by the asymmetric design and the theoretical appeal of the lower profile allowing a better factory sight picture, I can tell you you're likely to be overall disappointed with it.

For one, they are not low enough to clear the majority of factory iron sights. The bore centerline distance to top of can is 5/8", while the top of most factory sights is closer to 9/16. You will still need taller sights with most host weapons.

2, they're simply not that quiet for a full size can. SiCo's published dB figures are more than a little optimistic, with real-world testing on the B&K Pulse system showing 138.6 dBA average from a 5" gun with plain old 230 gr. ball. Using the Osprey on a .45 without ear protection hurt my ears.

3, they are weak with thin, flat-sided aluminum housing. 10mm is pushing it.

4, only SilencerCo makes the grooved pistons for them, so if you have a weird muzzle thread they don't support, you got problems. I recently had to cut those grooves in one of our 14x1 RH pistons for a customer with an Osprey, cost him an extra $75.

5; nobody makes direct thread mounts or adapters that work with them, so your only option for fixed barrel hosts is a piston spacer. No muzzle devices, 3 lug or other QD.

Once i figured out how to build an all stainless and titanium can that was lighter, shorter, quieter, and able to handle large magnum rounds all day long, I sent the Osprey down the road with zero regrets. Luckily, it was still owned by my company, so it was a simple F3 transfer and I only lost about $200 selling the used, excellent condition suppressor.

Run away from the Osprey. Get a TiRant 45M or a TBAC FLY45 instead.

Shameless plug:

There's also our TLX, 4.1 ounces with mount in .45, can run boosterless, and though not approved for it, has withstood full power .308 win from the 18" Kel Tec RFB

I agree that the sights on most handguns won’t clear the Osprey, which is disappointing. My experience is that it is quieter than an AAC TiRant 45, as at an outdoor shoot I shot mine on a 1911 next to another shooter with the TiRant on an HK (I think) without hearing protection. Neither was painfully loud, the rounds hitting the steel targets were louder than either.

Round cans are always going to be stronger pressure wise than those with corners, as those corners create stress concentrations, all other things being equal, of course.

Mine resides on a PCC with a spacer so it is direct threaded onto the barrel. It works well and is stupid quiet on that setup.

I got mine on sale at the LGS, so no waiting other than the feds. I don’t think I would have paid full price or waited for months to start the process.

Thanks for the info and suggestions.

Both of the pistols I have threaded barrels for, a 1911 and a Hi-Power, have tallish sights, so the Osprey should work out from that perspective. I am not interested in any higher-powered cartridges, so extra strength shouldn’t be a big issue. I’ll know a lot more when I get to use it.

I got a pretty decent price on the Osprey, so my big frustration now is the lack of news about when it will be available. Guess I’ll just keep checking with Silencer Shop and hopefully find someone who is willing to look at the actual status.

It will be interesting to see how much effect the pistol brace SBR applications have on suppressor wait times. Perhaps I should put it in my will ;)

Just got a reply from SilencerShop. I am now number 16 in the que, so the next time they get a shipment, hopefully, perhaps. It’s going on my trust, they have the paperwork so, once we have the unit and the serial number, I gather it’s just a matter of paying the $200 and waiting in another que. o_O

I also need to get pistons for the 1911 and the Hi-Power, but as the ATF will be moving at a glacial pace, no big rush.
