I wanted to take the most notable and one of the more notorious mag companies and compare the two products. I was not only amazed at the amount of similarities between the two magazines in regards to look and design, but I was also not exactly surprised at the result of fit, finish, and function. I'm sure you can guess the outcome, but take a minute to watch the video I'd appreciate your thoughts regarding these and other magazines.

At the peak of the 30rd mag shortage, the local gun store had a crate of Pro-Mags for something like $15 each (I think..)

I had vague recollections that a "P-something-other" mag was good, so I bought one.

Whoopsie!!

Oh well. Better a Pro-mag than "No-mag"! hah

I'll abuse it sometime at the range during mag changes by letting it fall to the concrete and see what happens.

Ummm, NO.

No mag means you're not under the mistaken illusion you're carrying something that will work to save your life in extremis. You can't say that without extensive testing of each and every Pro-mag (and then you better check them frequently for signs of incipient failure).

Not all PRO-mags are junk. I've got a couple extended capacity mags that are S&W 59 series double stack 9mms. I've run a lot of rounds through both the 15 & 20 rounders. Haven't touch any other PRO-mags though.

Edit: had a derp moment and switched Pro Mag with PMag.
Sorry about the confusion.

Huh?

The Magpul PMAG is the gold standard AR15/M4 style magazine.

p-mag stands for...what?

You can see how I got confused!

Only reason I got one was because I only had two (functioning) mags for my AR, and I was in the gun store anyway, so I grabbed one.

I prefer steel mags anyway.

Magpul Pmag - The only magazines I use in ARs. I have seen them turn jamming no name parts guns into reliable no name parts guns :).

ProMag - I will smash it with a hammer and throw in the garbage before even trying it in the gun.

I had problems with magpul mags in Iraq around 2007 when I tried them. I am not sure if was the sand, heat etc. I ended up dropping one after 3 months use on the roof of a Humvee and the lip shattered off. I was not happy and planned to send it back, but never got the time. Maybe it was a pre-design?

Oh boy...

I have an old Pro Mag AR 30 rounder that has never given me problems. I'm not sure I'd buy a stack of them though.

Did I ever mention that S&W 916 I once had?

No ALL pro-mags are junk.................most are, but not all
Well, then the ones I have experience with have been in the "most" category.

Magpul P-Mags on the other hand, are very high quality.

P-Mags are good enough that I tossed all my issued mags and used my own P-Mags in Iraq and Afghanistan. Never a misfeed, never a malfunction, and ALWAYS easier to seat compared to aluminum issued ones. Regarding ProMags...never heard of them or seen them in Army circles.

There were some staff turds that tried to make us use the Army issued stuff partly through my last deployment. There are actually people over there that have nothing better to do than hassle those of us who actually go on patrols every day.

One look at what the SOF guys were using (also P-Mags) told me everything I needed to know.

ProMag and Tapco are.. uhh.... Yuck.

Yes, ProMag does make awful magazines. I've never had any issues with any of my AK Tapco mags though. Plenty tough for my use.

Never used PMags but they seem to get rave reviews. I use GI mags in my AR.

What AK platform? Tapco are worthless in my Bulgarian AK-74. Only run plum, bakelite or Bulgarian issue steel for reliability.

Since this is going that direction...the best AR magazines seem to be

1. Magpul PMAG (except Gen2 20 rounders)
2. Lancer L5 AWM (at least the opaque ones)
3. Legit/quality USGI aluminum, especially 20 rounders (especially by NHMTG), or 30 rounders with Magpul anti tilt followers
4. Some others, but I'll just leave it at the above, for a few reasons

Pro Mag's are a crap shoot. Some work, many don't. I bought a few for a Ruger P-95. Stink to function ratio was about 2:1. I bought a couple for a Chinese Tokarev that worked just fine.

TAPCO mag's work just fine in a Ruger Mini-14, at least the newer generation. The older ones needed to have the metal tab taken off the front but then they worked fine.

Thermold mag's required a lot of fiddling before they worked right in the Mini. They're range mag's at best.

In the Canadian Military they are called Thermelts :).

Put a Blank Firing Adaptor on an M16 or full auto M4 loaded with blanks and watch the Thermold feed lips turn to goo when the rifle gets hot.

The Thermold speedloaders and stripper clips can actually be ignited with a match and used to start a fire in an emergency.

No Thank You.

Polish Tantal and Waffen Werks Bulgarian 74.

My son has always been a PMag guy, recently he has gotten pretty enthusiastic about Lancer Magazines. In his job (USCG Gunners Mate) he has discretionary authority to purchase to equip his unit and always went PMag.

His durability testing has always included driving a truck over the magazine, leaving them underwater for a week or two, kicking them through a pile of sand, etc., and multiple combinations of the preceding.

Now he's buying Lancer's for Dad's Christmas stocking

Have never had a problem with a PMAG. Have put thousands of rounds through them (regardless of capacity or Gen) but not shooting them full auto so no reference there.

Pro Mags are awful. I've not seen one Pro Mag run reliably, in any platform.

Tapcos have worked great in every AK I've used them in. Never tried them in an AR, though. And I still wouldn't use them for anything other than range and hunting purposes.

PMAGs are fantastic, and what every AR owner should use.
