P10-45 locks back after every round

I have acquired a Para Ordnance P10-45 (aka Warthog) - a sub-compact 1911 style pistol. When I got it, it had an aftermarket high-capacity magazine. Every round fired, the slide would lock back. I then purchased a magazine from Para-Ordnance for the gun -- same thing happens. I then noticed that when the slide is locked back, and with no magazine installed, by pulling back on the slide, it does not disengage (as it does with all of my other pistols, including other 1911's). The only way to disengage the slide is to push down on the slide stop. Any thoughts on what the problem may be?

Knowing what I do about Para, my first guess is it left the factory with an out of spec MIM part, namely the slide stop. I'm willing to bet if you pull it apart and look closely, you'll find that the slide stop is "beefy", their word for "out of spec" and is impinging on something else inside the frame, making it ride up to the engaged position.

Pulling the top end off and working with the frame and a magazine may give you a better view of what is exactly hitting where.

I'm also willing to bet the original owner sold it for this very reason and got no satisfaction from Para about it.

Take the slide stop out and look at the part that projects inside the grip frame.

See if there are any brass tracks on it?

If there is, the bullet shape you are using is hitting it and bumping it up into full lock each time the mag spring pushs the next one up to the top of the mag.

If you find brass tracks, use a needle file and remove enough of it the bullets stop hitting it, and the mag follower still engages it on last round empty. Then polish the snot out of it.

You can use a loaded mag in the grip with no slide, just the slide stop pin in place and check for bullet ogive interference.

Also make sure it isn't your thumb whacking the slide stop under recoil and engaging it due to the grip you are using.

If the gun has a plastic Shoc-Buff recoil buffer in it, that is taking up the last 1/8" of slide travel and is keeping you from sling-shotting the slide.

Because the slide cannot be pulled back far enough for the ramp cut in the slide to push the slide stop down.

Thanks for the great advice and insight -- especially to take it apart and closely look at it. I did (for the 20th time), but this time I did as you folks said and examined the workings. I think the problem I have is the recoil spring assembly is the wrong one for this gun, or, at least part of it is. I think that it is both too long, and the plate that rests near the barrel-connector part is not concave enough.

The first part (being too long) prevents me from not being able to pull the slide back enough so the slide stop catch is pushed down by the slanted front of the cut-out on the slide. The maximum point I can slide it back is about 1/16" beyond where it catches (and, there is no buffer blocking this travel). The overall length of the assembly is 2 5/16".

The second part is what I think is causing the slide to lock back after each round. the lack of either the plate being concave enough, or the plate being held back too far by the retaining ring, is causing the end of the assembly to push on the barrel connector. I can tell that is causing a problem, both in the way it pushes the almost all the way back (making re-assembly a little tougher), and when I take out the slide stop, I can feel movement (showing it is under pressure). I think somehow this pressure is causing it to lock back after the round is fired (it does not lock back when I just feed a round into it).

To demonstrate how my recoil spring assembly is different, compare this picture of mine spring assembly (Recoil Spring P10.45) to that of one posted by another party on a different forum (recoil spring - Warthog). With mine, you can see the end of the rod extending about 3/32" beyond the plate.

Now, I just have to find a place to get the correct replacement (Brownell's shows it as a discontinued item). Thanks for everyone's input.
