P220 or G30sf as a duty gun?

I have a p220 that I LOVE, it has been totally reliable. Never had a malfunction of any kind. I've never held a G-anything that I liked.

In the end it's your gun, not mine. Buy what you like.
But I do recommend the p220.

The glock is a smaller gun, and you won't have much less recoil from a .45 in a small gun like that compared to your .40.

The sig is larger and heavier than the glock, but it might be easier to shoot well compared to a smaller gun depending on your hand and personal preference. How will you carry the gun during duty? Do you need a smaller sub compact for duty? The sig and glock are a lot different in size.
And which one do you shoot better?

Has OP mentioned why the 30 over the 21? A loaded G21 weighs only 4oz MORE than an UNLOADED P220... The G30 loaded is 1oz LESS than an unloaded P220. I'd go for the G21 for a 5oz difference.

And I'd go Glock > SIG any day for a duty gun. The consistent trigger, lower bore axis, and capacity of the G21 make it incredibly hard to beat by any other non-polymer .45 on the market. Love my SIGs, but the Glock is just better-suited for the job.

And some posters on the first page do think there's less recoil going from the .40 to the glock in .45, so maybe they're right.

Sig P220
-Heavier
-Taller
-Wider
-Longer
-Less capacity (could run 10rd magazines)
-DA/SA, DAO, SAO, or DAK
-Slimmer grip
-Decocker
-More expensive

Glock 30
-Lighter
-Shorter
-Slimmer (doesn't seem that way to me but I compared stats from SIG's site to Glock's site)
-Striker fire
-Wider frame than P220
-Higher capacity (13rd G21 mags could be used as well)
-Cheaper

SIG is coming out with a new double-stack P220 (P227) which is supposed to be as slim as a P226. So, you might hold out for that. Glock is also coming out with the slimmer G30s.

Both are super reliable guns and I'm going to have to say that I like the Sig P220 better but that's just personal preference. To me it feels better in the hand and I like the DA/SA trigger setup.

Could compromise with a .40 cal Sig SP2022. :D

I don't like the bottom of the grip on the G21. It sticks out too far back for my taste and changes my point of aim.

A valid reason to choose the G-30 over the 21. But, have you tried the G-21 SF with the shorter grip, or the versions with interchangeable backstraps. That may make a difference to you. I prefer the G-19 over the G-17 for essentially the same reason.

You can also just heat the "hump", and push it in a little. Subtle look, big difference in feel.

Get the SIG. It looks, fits and shoots better. It won't pinch your finger between the magazine and frame when you reload quickly.

My 220 has yet to fail. At the end of the day, it just fits. And if it was a duty weapon I wouldn't worry about the weight, as you should have a good belt on.

The 227 may be even more promising though...

I've been carrying a P-220 for several years and love it. Actually, I own two P-220's; one for duty (blued) and one I normally use to training/plinking (two-tone). If I can't take care of my problem with 8+1 rounds of .45acp, then I need a bazooka!

There's no way in hell a P220 is thicker than a G30/G21. Just no.

But that doesn't matter because it isn't being concealed. A larger gun is easier to handle.

Use Glock 21 mags if you're concerned about pinching your hand during a fast reload. Or just go with w 21-SF instead of the 30

I have not owned a 220 since the early nineties, but the Sig website shows the 220 to be wider than the 30. My 229R in .40, advertised at the same width as the P220, was a pig compared to the 30SF. I understand that a gun can be a monster for uniformed carry in a duty holster because it doesn't matter. I strive for a gun that can be carried all the time. The 30SF meets that criteria for me. YMMV

I'd take the G30SF. I'm not a big fan of SA/DA, so the SIG is out unless you grab one in DAK. I still prefer a Glock trigger over the DAK. Also I don't like full-size Glocks so the G21 is out. I'd rather carry the 19 or 26 in 9, the 23 or 27 in .40, or the 30SF in .45. That's just me.

SIGs are great but selecting a SIG over a Glock because of reliability is like choosing a spoon over a fork for mashed potatoes. They're both superb tools for the job.

My first choice would a Springfield XDM followed by a Glock 21 or a M&P45, Not a fan at all of the d/a action of the Sig P220 and their recoil feel abit harsh to me compared to polymer pistols. Plus, you're losing 5 rounds of 45acp in comparison to a double stack 45 pistol like the Springfield or Glock

That's what I'm thinking. I have a Glock 29 and the slide dimensions are identical to the Glock 30. I put my Glock 29 next to my P220 (has stamped slide so I don't know if there are thickness variations between stamped and milled slides) and the Glock 29 looks fatter. If I had a caliper I would measure.

Lay them side-by-side on a flat surface and lay a hardcover book over both. High side of book is the thicker weapon.

I could do that but it wouldn't really tell me the actual difference in thickness.
Glock website lists the G30SF as having a width of 1.27 inches. G30SF Specs
SIG website lists the P220 as having a width of 1.5 inches. P220 Specs

Difference of 0.23 inches, or less than 6 mm.

Case closed. The Glock is thinner than the SIG.

Glock 30s Width 1.28 http://us.glock.com/products/model/g30s

Glock's website advertises the Glock 30s as having a slimmer slide than the Glock 30sf. So, I don't really believe anything now. I have a G29 slide right next to my Sig P220 slide (stamped slide). It's obvious the G29 is bigger. I'm going to get a caliper tomorrow and measure it. My money is on the Sig being slimmer.

Case not closed.

I think the manufacturers are measuring from the widest point only, rather than the various elements (slide, grip).

The Glock 30 comes off as much wider in the slide area, while the P220 is slightly more narrow. Overall, they're about the same. Pictured is a Glock 21, which has the same width as the 30. The Glock 30 slide feels much wider than it is. However, the photos below show the differences as negligible at the rear of the slide. Notice the SIG tapers slightly towards the muzzle, though the slide release adds width in that location only. Glocks are called "Blocks" for a reason.

The practical differences are:

1) The wider slide of the Glock can be felt in IWB or appendix IWB holsters.
2) The grip of the Glock is slightly longer. The SIG 8 round magazines add quite a bit of height and make it nearly the same length.
3) SIG magazines are easier to hide.
