I have an 870 that i bought used that was previously painted in a camo pattern. The guy that did it did a good job but I am wanting the gun to be black.

What would you recommend I do to remove the old paint and apply new paint? I will probably use spray paint of some sort. Has anyone used the Krylon camo paints? Should I use engine block paint? I even saw one on here the other day that was painted with truck bed liner that looked pretty good.

Thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

You could also strip the paint and blue it or parkerize it. I believe either of those are doable at home without a ton of trouble.

Obviously you need to make a decision about the paint. What are you going to be doing with it and how "important" is it for you to have the finish act as if its an "orginal"?

Duracoat and Alumihyde paints are outstanding tough finishs and if applied correctly will last years. If your looking to just bring it back to black and don't mind touching it up once in awhile then krylon paints will do the job. Model paints work very well also and I tend to wear a bit better the krylon over time...

With that said........

What would you recommend I do to remove the old paint and apply new paint?

Acetone will do the job...
MEK will also work (depending on where you lie and the availability)
Krylon makes a product called Krylon Off.....
Starter fluid etc etc etc

Has anyone used the Krylon camo paints?

Yes - I painted my rifle and a abused and misused department shotty with Krylon Camo paints and have been completely satified with them. Just need to make sure the gun is "dry" before going to it (degrease and quick oven bake will do the trick)

Duplicolor 500 is OK, Krylon is garbage. ALuma-Hyde II is good if you prep properly.

I wouldn't say they are garbage. It depends on what your trying to accomplish in the long run....

The shotty I finished has been back in service for many months now, seeing hard use on many calls and shows no ill effects. Would you call that finish "garbage"? It covered all the pits and came out smooooooth! Its not alumihyde or duracoat by any means and will start to degrade overtime but for what it is used for - thats fine.

20 minutes and $2.69 - she can be knew again.

Great Job! I myself have done the same $2.69 paint job on a couple long guns. They have all held up so far.
