Good Afternoon,

I have a model 94 .32 Win Special that I put a Skinner peep on. At 50 yards, It now shoots about 5 inches high. I know I need a new, taller front sight, does anyone have any recommendations on a good front site that I can file down or adjust? Thank you.

I am guessing you have a Winchester 94?
I believe Skinner makes a front sight that should match the rear peep sight.

Which “94” do you have?

Do a search for “front sight height calculator “ there are many out there. Also directions for the equation if the calculator won’t work for you. It sounds really complicated, but, is not bad after a couple tries.

Yes a old Winchester 94 shoots a great group, just a bit high

Not familiar with the Skinner sight, but the Lyman and Redfield peeps I own have elevation settings for different yardage...any chance you've got it run up too high or is it bottomed out?

Those are just a 3/8" dovetail, right? To get the height, I would just make a "hat" for the sight out of JB weld on your existing sight, and adjust it down with a file at the range so the POI is where you want it. Then measure the new height.

Height is measured from the bottom of the dovetail to the top of the sight.

After that, just look for a 3/8" dovetail sight close to the sme height. Somewhere like here: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1184127653/

I had the same issue with a Henry front sight. It shot high at 50 yards even dialed all the way down. A higher sight (from Henry), some time with a file, and many odd looks at the range got it sighted in.

I also did the same with a Skinner front sight blade. I’m not familiar with the front sights on a Winchester 94, but if it has a 3/8” dovetail, Skinner sells a front blade/Patridge sight that can be filed down. It’s pretty tall to start so you should have room to make the needed changes.

Fiber Optic front sites will naturally lower you point of aim, just because the fiber part is mounted on a raised metal bed. Another thought is to check out Tract of the Wolf for a muzzle loader front bead/site that would sit on an inline. The upright blades with come in steel or brass are made to be trimmed down.

I have always bought the Skinner partridge style front dovetail sights and filed them down. After filing where I needed them, I put some black paint over the area filed.

Replacing the front sight is likely your easiest option.
You might want to go the whole hog, and go to a tang sight, which should offer a little more range of adjustment.
BTW, I replaced the front sight of a '92 with a faux ivory bead; it really picks up well against broken backgrounds.
