I'm looking for a peep sight for my Winchester 54 that doesn't require any wood to be removed from the stock to install it. I like the Williams FP, and 5D, but I believe that wood has to be removed in order to install either of them. I would go with a Williams WGRS, but I called them today, and they say that they don't have a specifc WGRS model for the 54 (though they might have one if I can find the theoretical radius of my receiver).

Any other ideas? Skinner sights look great, but I want the sight for target shooting as well as hunting (they don't look too adjustable), and I don't know if they make sights for receivers with holes 1/2" apart. Any experience with the LO-Pro?

What wood has to be removed for a Williams to work? They just screw into the two little holes on the left side of the receiver.

I thought that wood right below the two holes had to be removed. It's like that with the Lyman 48W.

Look at the reviews on Midway here and here.

The holes look closer to the stock than the sight allows.

I just realized that those two reviews were for Remingtons. Does anyone have actual experience with putting a 5D or FP on a pre-64 70 or M54?

I think you'll find that you need to remove material from the stock to make those examples work. What about taking a Williams WGRS (or similar) and finding a dowel/pipe/rod of similar diameter, wrapping medium grit sandpaper around it, and filing the bottom of the sight to match the contour of the receiver?

:)

Ha! If you needed to remove wood on a 94, you'd have some problems!

Or one heck of a collector's find. :)

Have you looked at Lyman's offerings? Also, I think one of the long discontinued Redfield receiver sights (you can still find them at gunshows or on-line) was made for the Model 54 that required drilling but not removing wood. I can't say this for certain but I seem to remember seeing and/or reading about such a hook-up.

I'm still thinking of a WGRS, but I have to measure the radius of my receiver first, and I don't have a set of radius gauges. If I don't find anything else, I can call Williams, and they can tell me which WGRS model will fit closest to my receiver's curve once I get that measurement.

The thing is, the receiver mount area is recessed into the receiver (you can see it behind the rear scope mount), so I can't just measure the overall diameter of the receiver. What I'll do though, now that the scope mounts are off, is compare the curve of the front mount to the curve of the rear. If the front matches, the radius of the recessed area should be the same as the radius of the front part of the receiver.

If you can find a Lyman 48 JWS, that sight should fit as it fits pre 64 M70's. Fits pre war M70's without having to mess with the stock.

Found one here that looks like it would fit. But $125? C'mon! It also looks like it's been modified to fit the stock without cutting the wood, as this one here is a solid block.

Thanks for the heads up on Redfield, Swampwolf. I just found an NOS on eBay for a song! Now all I need is a slot blank. Brownells is out of the blued, Midway is out of both the Marbles and Lyman blued. I'd backorder, but a $3 fee for purchasing less than $25, and $3.76 to ship? $10 for a piece of steel the size of a quarter doesn't sit well with me.

Here is one in stock, albeit no less costly. I don't know if Optics Planet charges a small-order fee (last order from them was about $600.00 ), but they have good CS.

:)

Coal Dragger,

I'm looking for primary sights. The scope mounts have already come off. I'm a really big fan of iron sights, and am looking for a set with better long-range potential.

Thanks for the link Maverick. It's going to cost $17 overall to have it shipped, which is even worse!

I guess I'll keep hunting around until the Midway Marble in blue is back in stock.

Can't blame you, though you may want to call up a few local gunsmiths...they might (and should) have what you need.

:)

Gunsmiths? Real people? That's absurd! So crazy it might work!

It's just a matter of finding the time to call around and find a gunsmith that has one, drive over there, plus gas, laziness, etc. That, and getting little packages of gun parts makes me feel like it's Christmas year 'round!

jjjj:

Skinner peep sights come with a standard .096 aperture, which is a compromise, good for hunting, or target shooting, but not perfect for either.

There are also available (@ roughly $11 per selection) other sizes.

For example:

.040 - recommended for target shooting in good light..
.070 - Medium
.125 - Large
.155 - X large

And finally the "Skinner Special" ( I don't have a clue either :uhoh:)

You can find all this info @ www.skinnersights.com, and if you have any questions you can email Andy (Larsson) at the email address provided at the site.

Good Luck,

Jesse

Thanks for the info Jesse,

I'm definitely going to get at least one more aperture, if only for sighting it in. From what I remember, I like something around a .08 for hunting, which is Redfield's midrange hunting sight. I just have to wait until the new sight comes in, so I can see what size comes with the sight, and what the threading is.

FWIW, the apertures are easily drilled to the diameter that you like, so it is best to order a size smaller unless they stock the size you want. If you are unsure, just drill it out a bit at a time until you arrive at the proper size for the amount of light you need and precision you want.

:)

I want to get two apertures for different purposes. One for target / sighting / long shots that I can carry in my pocket, and another for general use. And i'm sure that I wouldn't drill a hole right through the center of the aperture I'd be trying to open up.
