Perfect Three?

Since we are talking about rifles only, I could get by with only two and be perfectly content: .22LR and .30-06.

I realize in these type of exercises there are no real right or wrong answers. But with the three I picked there would be no gaps in bullet weights between calibers. For instance, in a .243 your top bullet weight is about 100 grains. That is where a 7mm starts and continues to about 180 grains. 180 grain bullets are available for 35 caliber rifles and continue to 300. See, no gaps.

Does it make any difference? Probably not. But I believe it is a good point.

how about a little old school I'll take a 32/20 for small game and varmint a 30/30 for medium and a 45/70 for the big stuff.

It's not about bullet weight, it's about SD and bullet construction. Also, rifleing twist plays a big part in what "weights for caliber" it will stabilize, a bullet of a given diameter.

DM~, tell us more about the drilling; that looks sweet! Is that a conversion barrel in the right shotgun barrel?

The rimfire bbls are Krieghoff insert bbls., i have two, one in 22LR and the other in 22WMR... They are ajustable to the sights of the gun they are in, go in and out easily, always go back to zero and shoot about like a decent bolt action rifle.

They aren't cheap, as they are precision made, but have been a very good investment for me, putting a lot of camp meat in the fry pan on extended hunts...

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

6mm? - 6mmBR in a short semi-heavy barrel for predators
7mm - easy - the 7mm Mag
35?.not so sure, would most likely go with a 375H&H for big game

I'm going to have to give a two part answer, depending upon if rimfire counts or not:

NOT COUNTING RIMFIRE

.223 (can substitute 22-250 if desired)
.308 (can substitute 30-06 if desired)
9.3X62 (can substitute .375 H&H if desired)

COUNTING RIMFIRE

.22LR
.223 (can substitute 22-250 if desired)
9.3X62 (can substitute .375 H&H if desired)

Personally I don't think they should count rimfires, as that lets one have a good small game rifle while still having a better range of rifles for other game. I've recently gone through this conundrum myself and I selected my three calibers without counting the .22LR.

ONLY ONE RIFLE

9.3X62 (can substitute .375 H&H if desired)
