Perhaps it's time for a new forum rule ... or two

I think someone should feed the entire archive of THR posts into a deep learning AI system, and then modify how posting works so that when you submit a "New Post" the thread is only visible to the poster and gets AI-generated responses synthesized to seem like they came from other posters.

Now I know what to tell my kids to do for work in the coming years. Go to school to become AI or a robot. Not sure about the benefits, but at least the work will be there! :D

I agree here.

I agree with you 100% except that I guess my level of annoyance is less than yours. With such a diverse group of people that we have here, we do get a number of cretins who just don't get it. If you pay attention to who the offenders are you will see that it a usually a small set of people who you can just put on ignore. You will not miss any insightful posts from these guys so there is no loss when their posts don't appear any more. You can also put on ignore people who use the very tired boating accident posts that just make them look juvenile instead of clever. Try the ignore button. You will be glad you did.

I don't think we need another rule. There's always some knuckleheads out there who don't get it. This even holds true in live face-to-face interactions. Thanks for the reminder though Old Dog.

yea, You forgot , hey, I have no money (insert explanation of why I have no money, and exactly how it wont change in the foreseeable future), my friend has a jennings, but the Hipoints look like a better gun, and available in 9mm, the caliber i want what do you think...... and immediately, the incredible annoying "for a few extra dollars you could buy a .45 HK USP, and have a gun to last a lifetime".... OR "save your pennies, and buy a Korth, its not that much more money". Nearly every thread.

OK, so I recently asked about long slide double stack 10mm 1911s for wilderness OC in the Autoloading Pistol form with a couple brand examples and someone gave a very helpful comment about The EAA Hunter which I did not even know existed. Some replies can be annoying but they are easily ignored. Sometimes the "unwanted" reply turns out to be quite welcome.

There is certainly a point to being helpful, and showing people more options, but really, some people are just telling you your wrong for not liking what they do, or cheap for not spending three times what a glock costs for something no better than a glock.

I think some relative thread drift and other suggestions are good. However, I don't think that's what the OP here is talking about.

What I see happening and is a bit disrespectful of the OP is this type of scenario (example changed to protect the guilty)

OP, I'm looking for a new car. I'm 75 years old and I have a bad left knee, need fuel efficiency, and all wheel drive because we get a little snow here. I also have 3 grand kids and 2 dogs that travel with me as I take them too school several times a week. Ive done some research and looked at several makes and models. The Subaru Forrester looks to fit the bill and is in my price range. Does any one have any experience with a Subaru Forrester?

Reply: You should get a motorcycle. Nothing gets better mileage than a motor cycle.
OP: I have kids and dogs
Reply: Get a trailer for when the kids and dog are with you.
OP: We also get light snow and I'm not comfortable riding a motorcycle... especially in the snow (remember my all wheel drive requirement?)
Reply: You just lack training. Ive offered you a better suggestion. I don't know what else I can tell you if youre not willing to look at the facts.

Reply: Ford F350 4x4 with a 8" lift with a 5 speed manual transmission and 38" Super Swamper mud tires is unstoppable.
OP: I have kids and a dog and a bad knee. That's too big, too tall, not in my price range, not fuel efficient and my bad knee cant be pushing in the clutch peddle too much. Also, I said light snow, not deep mud. No one recommends mud tires on snow paved roads.
Reply: Get a ladder, save up and spend the extra $7k to get the diesel then and make your own biodiesel fuel in your barn.
OP: That's doesn't help, plus my knee cant take pushing in the clutch like I mentioned
Reply: A 5 year old can push in the clutch. You need training.
OP: Its also waaay out of my price range.
Reply: Buy once, cry once! UNSTOPPABLE!!!!!1!!1!!
OP: I also don't have a barn, I live in a city.
Reply: Sucks to be you. Id never live in a city. You should move to a free state. If your daughter and grandkids are not willing to come with you, they must be liberals that like having every part of their lives oppressed by communist tyrants.

It would be one thing to reply with:
I don't have experience with the Forrester but I did look into one a few years ago and ended up going with a AWD minivan. Relatively the same price, low step in height for your bad knee, not quite a good MPG, but a LOT more room inside for the kids and dog and the AWD does well in light snow. Did you look into those when you were doing your research?

But instead, we too often see the above types of responses.

And that's really THE BEST possible outcome to almost any thread. A real education about something that you'd never even have known about -- better by far than a simply "yes/no" answer to the question posed.

That's the best work we can do as a forum, and it's probably worth the petty annoyance of the "don't buy a Jenningz, buy a Korth!" less helpful responses.

One guy's dumb answer is another guy's epiphany. Gotta take some of the lumps with the good.

Nice post OP...

So the 1911 is far superior to Glock because.... :)

I'm with ya. I stray from the exact listed brands, items etc, but I try not to run off on tangents. I have seen a few of my threads derailed quickly be random comments. A lot of times it is a well meant comment that leads us away.

Now let's get back to arguing over whether it's energy or penetration that kills a deer...

How about when they interject something else 5 posts after the OP shows a picture of the gun they already bought.

The problem with limiting the scope of discussion is that it inhibits the free exchange of information and ideas, good and bad. Moderator bias will invariably creep in as messages are progressively deleted subject to the whims of a few select individuals. Better to let threads run their course and die out on their own.

Ahh yes.

As the Rules page says:

A note on FREE SPEECH:

The First Amendment to the Constitution states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The First Amendment is greatly respected here on The High Road, as are all other Amendments that the Second Amendment defends. However, The High Road is private property and requests that members adhere to all forum policies. It is a contract agreed to by all who become members of The High Road. Those who break forum rules cannot invoke censorship or freedom of speech - a contract broken is a contract broken. If you do not like the rules of conduct or the acceptable topics, seek out a new venue to frequent or start your own board.

So, for what it may be worth, not all threads are going to run their course and die out on their own. There are forums which operate that way, and we encourage all our members to explore those options and decide for themselves where they feel comfortable.

Lol! Thread winner! :D Nailed it all.

I don't know if it's possible with The High Road's software, but other forums will put a red marker of some sort for all the OP's posts in the OP's thread. It helps a lot with following the OP's wants, replies, rebuttals, etc.

Especially with easily forgotten forum usernames without a standout avatar. Then combine that with other forum members using small portable devices to scan through the forums in a hurry.

You referred to this as a free speech forum. Understand that it is no such thing. You are allowed in at the discretion of the management to ask questions and alternately offer solutions and/or opinions. You haven't paid to be here. It is not a constitutional right. You are a guest and expected to behave accordingly.

While that may seem over the top, the number of former members that fail to understand that simple point is staggering.

Also, understand that many of the opinions are worth what you paid. It's up to the consumer to sort the wheat from the chaff

I like Ford, you like Chevy, and he likes Dodge. But we all should know Nissan is really the best. A lot of guys have fragile enough egos that their personal purchase needs to be reinforced by someone else buying the same product so as to validate their choice.

Nope, I don't agree. I've been around this and several other forums related to guns and other topics for a long time. Many times when someone comes asking for advice they don't know enough to even ask the right questions. I've seen lots of alternate suggestions made that the OP never even knew existed that proved to be the best option.

Yep.

I don't have enough money to buy one of everything.

Now honestly, many times someone recommends a product simply on a sample size of 1. But if a dozen guys like something, we start approaching a statistically valid point.
