Perhaps it's time for a new forum rule ... or two

"I want something to hunt elk at 400 yards or more. Should I get a .22-250 or just stick to my .243?"

Ol' Uncle Elmer thought the minimum caliber for this sort of thing should be a .338, and I'm with him.

Wait, what was this thread about, again?

I think if they answer the original question then, add brands or ideas that might be an alternative, that's fine with me.

It is when you get the, "Both of those are garbage, get this instead," those bug me.
But, what if "both of those" are garbage?

Whether something is garbage or not is an opinion, but if many people share that opinion it might have a grain of truth to it.

And there's thing I don't know I know because nobody has asked me yet.

And thats a pretty fair question.

What I try to do is to, 1st, actually answer the persons question (foreign concept to some)...... then suggest something else.

A helpful Reply: Of those listed, Id get the XYZ. But Id really not want either. ABC is pretty comparable and that's what Id try to get for these reasons.

An unhelpful, snarky-ish reply: None! Those are ALL GARBAGE!! Get a REAL GUN!!!

(Also note: Using all caps, multiple !!!!!, and bold doesn't make that reply any more helpful than it already isn't.)

Well, this is where it gets interesting. I love when people share opinions from first hand experience. That is why we come here, to learn from others who share our interests. BUT, the interesting part is those who share their opinions when they never held, shot or owned the gun being discussed and "heard" that the gun in question or the company in question is no good. These rumors get passed around and they start to believe their own rumors as fact. 'Their cousin's girlfriend's brother once had a GunX that blew up with factory ammo and is a piece of junk' type of internet lore. Internet rumors are what ruin threads.

The Highroad is about the most civil firearms site I've seen. There are other firearms sites that are OK with some very objectionable posts. This is pretty much the only firearms site I visit anymore.

Given the level of civility here, I suggest we leave it as it is.
